The Malt River

The lone traveller wearily drops his pack as he enters the main square behind the Causeway gate. His eyes drift over the buildings that form the walls of the square. They are a mix of stone and timber-framed buildings. To his left a,n imposing building built in the Dunadan style catches his eye. The sign hanging from the front, a barrel with a river of ale flowing from it, proclaims itself to be an inn. He imagines a large foaming mug. He swallows hard imagining the cool liquid flowing down his throat. He moves towards the well-maintained door to the public bar, the bottle glass windows glow rosily with warmth beckoning him on.   "I wouldn't if I were you," calls a voice to one side, "A pint will drain your purse." Disappointed, the traveller turns aside and sets out to find an establishment slightly cheaper than the Malt River and its plush fittings and fine food and drink.

Description of rooms in the Malt River

  1. Public bar- A 30x50' room seats around ten patrons comfortably. The furnishings are simple and homey but of a high quality. The room is dominated by a large bar of solid oak which houses an array of drinking vessels. On the wall behind the bar are kept a number of casks of local and imported ales. There are three doors in the room, one is the entrance from the street; another leads to the main dining room and the final one leads to the kitchen and is used by servers to collect drinks orders.
  2. Main dining room and stage - This large room is dominated by a stage area at the far end of the room. Backdrop hangings mask the rear walls and sets can be created using a large number of boards. The guest tables are impeccably furnished with white linen, silver cutlery and candlesticks. Guests are seated on plush, upholstered dining chairs. Entrance from the public bar is through a small side door, a larger main door is the normal method of entry. Staff and residents can access the rest of the inn through a large set of double doors. There are also covered entrances to the backstage area and some cunningly disguised trapdoors in the stage.
  3. Kitchen - The workspace for the chef and her three assistants. They are supported by five pot washers at various times during the day depending on the number of guests and if the evening has an entertainment event when there will be around eight serving girls and boys. During the day you may also find the odd chambermaid who has popped into the warm kitchen for a chat. The kitchen boasts all the usual paraphernalia.
  4. Storerooms - Three storerooms with an array of food and wines used for the customers of the inn.
  5. Private room - should your party require a discrete place in which to host a function or business function then this room built into the rock behind the Malt River. It is, as is every room in the Inn, well furnished and contains a large table that is often used for gaming and eating.
  6. Backstage rooms - The plain backstage area can appear a little chaotic with chairs and tables used by the artists fighting for space with rolled up backing canvases and leftover over props.
  7. First floor bedrooms - Sleeping a variety of guests per room, each door can be locked with a key and has a secure chest also with a lock for storing personal items.
  8. Premier rooms - are similar in standard to the first floor rooms but come with an additional living room space. Comfortable seating and writing desks are provided for guests who can also order food to be brought up to their rooms.
  9. Luxury rooms - A step up in furnishings from Premier rooms and far more palatial in size. The level of security is also far higher and for those who wish Hal can secure many other services for the guests.
  10. Hal and Dulcie's living quarters - perhaps smaller than Dulcie would like (she dreams of living in one of the town's villas) but still home to the owners of the Malt River. The rooms are tastefully decorated by Dulcie this is where the pair go to escape the constant demands of running the inn.
