Spider Cloth

This material is a fabric that is almost exclusively made by the Elves of Ethradrel.   The strength of spider silk is well known. It has a tensile strength of roughly 1.3 GPa, and at its density that makes it five times as strong as the same weight of steel. It is nearly impossible to harvest in any quantities however. There have been modern attempts to make alternative and more readily available sources of silk, but they have been expensive.   The Elves however are able to use magic and their affinity with nature to get spiders to produce the silk for them.   Through the means available to them, they get the spiders to produce sheets of spider silk in a form of cloth. This material is incredibly strong, flexible, and breathes easily. The process of creating this cloth however is time consuming, and the Elves produce a limited amount.   The cloth will not reduce concussive force, but is highly resilient to slashing and piercing attacks. The cloth traditionally has been used in underclothes for the aristocracy. This has allowed people to have a set of spider cloth garments for self defence, rather than having dozens of spider cloth outfits.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Most commonly used in clothing.

Refinement

Spider cloth in its raw form is a colourless material. It will usually be dyed before it is used in clothes.   The material is very difficult to cut, so most things made by spider cloth tend to be a bit rectangular. It can be cut, but it has to be with specially designed tools. Normal shears would be unable to cut through the material.   To sew pieces of spider cloth together, spider silk thread is used to not compromise the integrity of the cloth. It is carefully put between the gaps between the threads.
