Dwarven Hall

Digging space in a mountain is a long, careful process. Dig out the wrong section of rock and it can cause a catastrophic cave in. As such, plans for expanding a Dwarven City must be made over the course of years. Each change has to be aware of other pending changes, and load has to be given consideration for everything that's done.   As such, living space is a very precious commodity in the deep cities of the Dwarves. They tend to live in larger communal housing that is flexible to the shrinking and growing of families over the years.   They tend to feature a long hall which acts as the living space. It is used for cooking, sleeping, and any other public activity. The halls tend to also have private rooms. There is always a storage room, which is used to keep personal affects and property safe. Usually there is a private privy. Some of the larger halls will have a private chamber for the leader of the hall.   Sleeping arrangements vary from family to family. It is not uncommon to have a series of benches that can be used to sleep on. Some have been known to use rope hammocks that can be hauled up and out of the way during waking hours.   Sometimes, Dwarven Halls will be built in part of a larger structure known as a Clan Hall. These Clan Halls will consist of numerous Dwarven Halls reserved for members of a specific clan. This tends to also feature an entire private dwelling for the head of the clan. These are known as a Clan Manor.

Architecture

There is no common architecture between the different Dwarven Halls. Each are unique to their circumstance and the family that lives within them.   Usually there is a fire pit in the centre of the hall to provide warmth and light to the hall that vents through a small hole in the roof. The floor tends to lack hard features, such as bolted down or built in benches or divisions, so that moveable furniture can be used instead. This allows the hall to be configured however necessary for whatever function it is fulfilling. Moveable walls for privacy while sleeping. Tables for dinning. The hall could be made to be whatever room or rooms was needed in the space available.
