The Assarians

A Black Corporation

"I told you before, Khal. Nobody betrays the Assarians. Especially not people like you and me. Therefor ... I hereby sentence you to death. Don't take it too personally.
— Assarian Executioner Shayn, towards a betrayer of the Family.

The Assarians. To think that a name can carry such weight in so many circles. Nobody knows much about them, except for what the Assarians wants to be known. Everything else, the finances and other more sensitive dates are only accessible to a few high stationed Family Members of the Old Blood.
What do they deal with? Everything. Everything from assassination, to protection. From espionage to blackmail. On one mission, they might simply poison an important political member, while blackmailing those closes to him to keep things quiet. On another, the Assarians might preform a cyber-infiltration process to steal important data. Maybe even bomb the entire building later just to cover most of their tracks. And nobody is safe from the blade of their Executioners; not even members of the Family itself.

Structure

New Blood

Those who are disposable

10+

New Blood are the members who have been part of the Family for at least a decade. They are to be inspected and evaluated regularly. About 3 out of 5 are either considered to be a security breach or have become traitors and are taken care of by the Executioners. Most of them are considered by the Old Blood to be disposable simpletons, but a few rare ones are more fondly looked upon, especially if they have a high track record.
Most are simple muscle who act as enforcers or low ranking spies and smugglers. A small percentages are efficient assassins or Cyber-Infiltrators who do fairly simple — but high risk — jobs.

Medium Blood

Those who are trusted

25+

Those of Medium Blood are members who have been part of the family for about 25 years and are considered to be loyal and trusted. At least most of the time. They form the strong core of the family and are given specific roles, whether it is as mundane as a Protector or as special as an Executioner. Other roles include Elite Cyber Infiltrator, Elite Assassin, and Elite Enforcer, jobs similar to those of New Blood but with a higher pay grade, among other things.
These are members who truly consider themselves to be part of a family and sees each other as brother and sister.

Old Blood

Those who are respected

40+

Old Blood are members who have been part of the family for at least 40 years. They are the most respected members of the Assarian family and it is rumored that a small number of them can trace their blood lineage to the original House Assarian. Their word is absolute law and they oversee all the operations that the Assarian Family deals with. They are the ones who have the final word regarding new possible members and may sometimes even request that one is to be contacted. No one except themselves is aware of their true numbers and they also hold all knowledge regarding the Family Assets.

History

The Past

1748 - 2042 PD

Contact with Parallel.
The Assarian Family have been part of Parallel for about 400 years. At first, the Family was nothing more than a Noble Household. Members of the House took contact with Parallel in an attempt to save the Household from financial ruin when no other option appeared available.

A contract signed and sealed.
Parallel, who had grown in influence in the last century, saw a chance for profit; the Assarian House might have hit hard financial times, but it was still considered to have a hefty amount of influential power; something that was decreasing by the week. Because of this, an agreement was made and a contract signed and sealed. Parallel would provide the Assarian House with financial support and the Assarians would be doing them services like espionage, blackmail, and smuggling. At least to begin with.

A new path of blood.
Over the following generations, the Assarians provided more and more services for Parallel. Money laundering was one of the primary ones, as well as providing diplomatic immunity to Parallel members, and placing out false evidence to convict the unjust. The service that became one of the major turning points for the Assarians was when they began starting a career regarding killing for profit. It first began with poison in a goblet or a swift cutting of a throat done by corrupt nobles. A few generations thereafter, family members began to be trained in the art form at an early age and during these times, the power of the nobles began to weaken in nearly every nation in Mésvéstell. At the same time, the power of companies began to expand.

Adapt within the shadow of betrayal.
The Assarians noticed that to hold on to their influence, they needed to adapt with the current times and started their own family company. The Assarian Company. It would be short-lived but leave a big impact on the family. After several decades of financial success on both a legal level, as well on the black market, several coordinated attacks on family members crippled both the House and the company. The surviving members quickly understood that this had been ordered by Parallel, but instead of going out in an act of mad revenge, they kept silent and adapted. They played ignorant in front of Parallel members and spent some amount of time chasing scapegoats to keep them calm.

A promise.
Why had Parallel ordered the crippling of the Assarians House and company? It was easy to uncover; they had begun to be seen as a threat and the surviving family members took this to heart. Their Family would become so powerful that they never would be crippled again by Parallel. And that was a promise that would come to fruition. But the path up to that point would prove to be a real challenge.

A new beginning.
They began anew by securing contacts with several influential and respected people who they knew they could trust. People whose families and companions had been their family's trusted collaborators for generations. They offered many of them a place within their Family of Crime; a place where they could be safe and not be overseen by Parallel directly. Soon, things began to stabilize for them.

A Family of Crime
Over the next several decades, the Assarian Family of Crime grew quickly in power, both in the political spectrum as well as the corporate. It no longer began to see kinship as the most valuable source of trust, but in bonds that had been sealed through oaths. Oaths that, if broken, would be met with death. Members of their Family of Crime started to call themselves the Assarians, in honor of their founders. Through hardships and a few big and small failures, the name Assarian became yet again a big player within Parallel. Only this time, they were not held back by family blood, and as such could grow even bigger and more powerful than before.   As of 2042 PD, they have become the biggest player within Parallel. Their influence and resources could easily go toe to toe with those of the biggest Corporations.

Present

2151 PD

A Black Corporation
At the present, the Assarian Family of Crime have solidified their power within Parallel to such an extent that one would need to first cripple the syndicate to have a chance of destroying them.   In the current times, they see a part of themselves as the biggest Black Corporation. However, they first and foremost see themselves as one big family, as they have for nearly 200 years. They take care of each other and will punish any who hurts their sisters and brothers.
