Desolation of Sinria'Un

The end of an Age
And the beginning of a new

General

The Desolation of Sinria'Un is the name of the cataclysmic event that occurred in the northeastern part of what once was the Tansrensien Empire. It was an event that both literally and metaphorically shook the entire planet to its very core. It promptly ended the Prophet's Dynasty and began the Nilhmaere Dynasty. It was also the beginning of the Great Defence.
— The Codex Chronicler.

Abridged version

In 2140 PD, 8 of Niante, 24:00 LMET, on the outskirts of Sinria'Un, a Mist Gate of about 7 kilometers in height was seemingly torn open with a glass-shattering shriek. Three previously undocumented, 5 kilometers tall Behemoths, nicknamed the The Dark Heralds, appeared from it within minutes.
Within two hours, the city of Sinria'Un had been destroyed and over 19 million people had died. The area around the Mist Gate, now known as Desolated Ground Zero, was swarmed by a dozen more Behemoths and thousands of Phantoms and Daevas.

The Conflict

The Prelude

In the years preceding the Desolation Event, Mist Gates became a much more frequent phenomenon in and around the metropolis of Sinria'Un, as well as the reported sightings of Raw Vesen. The Nilhmaere could cover large areas in and around the metropolis; making the citizens feel depressed and sick. Magicians - particularly Witches - suffered the worst, with many dying from unknown causes or suicide.   This caught the attention of the Primordial Elementals - in particular, Mother Saimmar. During the following decades, she stayed in the metropolis as a safety precaution; not that she would be able to really save it should the worst thing happen.

Deployment

The 8 of Niante, 2140 PD, was a seemingly calm night with a clear, starlit sky. A bit cold perhaps, but that was nothing unusual for the time of year; after all, winter was just around the corner. Humans, Haemople and Alfar enjoyed themselves, worked, or slept; unaware of what would occur.   It began with a feeling of wrongness in the air; a large majority of the citizens of Sinria'Un paused in what they did and looked about without finding the source of this disturbing sensation.   Only seconds thereafter, an ear-piercing shriek shattered every window in a 13-kilometer wide radius just as the fabric of reality was torn asunder. The accompanied shockwave destroyed, or at the very least heavily damaged, all structures in a 5-kilometer wide radius, and instantly killed anyone who was within its perimeter, pulverizing their bones and liquefying their organs.   Most of those who were beyond the instant-killed-and-destroyed-area — which was most of the Sinria'Un's denizens — suffered broken bones, internal bleeding, and ruptured eardrums, as well as head-trauma and hypothermia. Others died being hit by debris, being trapped in buildings set on fire, or in the ensuing chaos.   Only minutes later, the Behemoths, later nicknamed the Dark Heralds, stepped through the colossal Mist Gate and caused even more death and destruction as they walked through the metropolis. They were quickly followed by hordes of Phantoms and legions of Daeva.

Engagement

Saimmar recognized the Dark Heralds; she had seen them a handful of times before. All to often, she had delivered the first devastating strike against them. And this would be yet another such moment.   When she felt the wrongness, she cast aside her disguise and Light Jumping to near the center of where she thought it would happen. She was off by around half a kilometer. When the Dark Heralds stepped through, Saimmar, for the first time in a very long time, embraced the full extent of her incredible power.
She hit the most forefront of the Dark Heralds hard, disintegrating everything between herself and it; it all appeared like a blinding light that turned night into day. The 200-meter wide ray of pure and intense sunlight pierced through the first Dark Herald and hit the one behind ti.
As the two Dark Heralds each gave off a pained scream and disintegrated into dust as they returned to Eärann, the one behind them rushed forward to attack a now weakened Primoridal Elemental. But Saimmar had other plans.   Before she performed a Light Jump to evade and recover, she injured the third and last Dark Herald even more with a precise and concentrated ray of sunlight, forcing it to cancel its charge. Then, finally, she Light Jumped away from what would soon become nothing but a wasteland, knowing that she would one day again stand against the three Dark Heralds.
After all, that was just how things had been and would always be.
— The Codex Chronicler.

Outcome

Shockwaves coursed through Mésvéstell both figuratively and literally. News of the event caused global panic, but that did not stop several nations from mobilizing their armies. The Tansrensien Empire was obviously hit hardest by the event but was also the quickest to mobilize their Air Force and Heavy Infantry. This was in many thanks due to the other Primordial Elemental's interference behind the shadows, who knew that a quick defense was of utmost importance.

Aftermath

Sinria'Un became the epicenter of the Eärann Horde — Desolated Ground Zero — and the prime example of what could happen to other cities. It both motivated people to continue the battle and made them lose moral.
The Tansrensien Empire soon broke apart in the following decades, much because of mass evacuation and mass death.

Historical Significance

Legacy

After the Age of Nilhmaere, Sinria'Un was declared No-Mans-Land and put under constant automated watch the first few hundred years. An abundance of Mist Gates would become the norm for the following thousand years, making the area a short of heaven for Raw vesen and Phantoms.

Mist Gate

Mist Gates are created when the Twilight Realm is exposed to Maa'Tayus Spectrum interference from Eärann, the realm of echoes and shadows. They are often found on locations with a history of great bloodshed, which has weakened the integrity of the Twilight Realm.   They have the appearance of bluish-white mist — known as Nilhmaere — that gives of an otherworldly cold that does not freeze water. Slight vibrations in the air can be visible to the naked human eye and it is believed that it is these that carry forth the dead coldness.

Phantoms

Eärann's most prominent inhabitants. These are the echoes of the ones that are born, live, and die in Mésvéstell. One name for these are Soul Echoes, but usually, they are called spirits or phantoms. Usually, the Soul Echoes are divide into two categories: Sapient Phantoms & Sentient Phantoms.
