The Untamed

Description

The Untamed, Wild One, Satyr or Great Tree is the god of nature, theatre and debauchery throughout Apias.   They have several responsibilities, including those relating to Nature, Arcana and The Grave.   His symbol, the beautiful drinking horn, is seldom actually depicted as being drunk from. It is at times, and this is perhaps how the Untamed differs so much from many of the other Apian gods, his depictions can vary significantly.   Sometimes there are two identical satyrs cavorting about a mighty tree, bearing the horns aloft. At other times, the tree is simply present with a small goat eating at its base, the drinking horn lying on the ground before it. Sometimes there is no tree, and just two beautiful satyrs and maenads enjoying each other. It is only in the last scene that the horn is depicted as being drunk from.   There are many links made between this god and the Host, and they are often grouped together as the Wild Gods, alongside the Huntress and the Shaman, the latter two bringing a more serious approach to the raw and unrestrained natures of the Untamed and the Host.

Dual Aspects

The dual aspect of The Untamed is somewhat disputed. The depiction often includes a tree, but sometimes other animals or fauns or maenads or satyrs. The depictions are often wild and graphic, unrestrained expressions of raw emotion.   Some scholars have argued that the tree itself is one of the representations, and other is a satyr or perhaps a maenad, or perhaps every woodland spirit is in some way a part of the Untamed. Some have even argued that the tree itself is two separate entities, with that which burrows into the ground being one part and that with reaches to the heavens being the other.   The veracity of either of these things is uncertain, however, unlike the Crone it is widely believed that the Untamed does indeed have two distinct aspects.

Significant Worshippers

The priests of the Untamed, Rafecatores, are traditionally druids of a sort, clad in wooden and leafy garments, unlike most religious figures they do not tend to live in major cities, eschewing them for the wilderness.   Their disciples are frequently tasked with making trips into the wild places of the continent to commune with it and gain a better understanding and feel for the land as a whole. Their priests also do not hold with the traditional mores and inhibitions of society, encouraging their flock to be open about their desires, their strengths and their weaknesses, the more they let go and allow nature to take them, as they see it, the better things will turn out in the end.   The Untamed has a relatively small following throughout Apias, partly due to its wild nature and partly due to many societies being averse to their relaxed view toward certain activities. It is not actively discriminated against, however, most larger communities of Untamed worshippers tend to live outside traditional society. Places like the Forests of Midamis, the Raging Badlands and, increasingly, the edges of the Blasted Frontier are where concentrations of such worshippers exist. Kardus and, to some extent, the Ospana Confederacy also have significant numbers of worshippers.

Divine Representatives

The Untamed's divine representatives are few and far between. Some claim they are everywhere, and yet others claim that there have been none for millenea.   The entry rituals into the religion, to become a Refecatore, may involve some means of communion, however, the Refecatores will not tell, if they even know at all, some scholars believe that there is mind altering magic that takes place during their vision quest.   Some also see any druid as a representative of the Untamed, however, the trained eye would tell you that Druids, while they use the magic of nature, do not subscribe to the same type of mentality as the worshippers of the Untamed and thus are unlikely to be true divine representatives.
