TD-11: Ruby Massacre

General Summary

I'm sitting in our house eating breakfast as the sun presumably rises outside, only 4 days until it's time to pick up that job, hopefully, it leads us back to the outside world. A scream suddenly interrupted my train of thought and I rushed outside increasingly worried and with weapons ready. As we reach the town square my heart sinks, ten, twenty, thirty humanoids are strewn about the plaza. I recognize some of them from the excavation site, all of them are visibly hostile. More screams are heard from a nearby building as several town guards start arriving. Crater is the first to engage together with the guards, I push away my worries and run-up to the closest enemy as the thrill of the battle takes over. Swing, Miss. The enemy dodges to the side as my greataxe cuts through the air where their head was half a second ago, unfortunately for them, their dodge is stopped by none other than Lilnirith as she delivers a surprisingly accurate punch, breaking the enemies nose judging from the sound. I take that opportunity to once again swing my axe, this time it’s met by a poorly armoured body instead of air. I leave the greataxe in the corpse and take out my handaxes, barely avoiding a sword coming from the side. Like extensions of my body the hand axes swing from side to side blocking two more swords coming my way before one sinks into the side of an enemy's head, his legs give up and he's dead before hitting the ground. Just as my axe is about to hit another enemy a sword comes out of nowhere and I instinctively lift my arm to meet it. It sinks into my arm until it reaches the bone, the wielder tries to pull it out but before she can I swing my axe creating a diagonal wound across her entire stomach. I continue fighting, focusing all my attention on each swing of the axe and each blade hurling towards me. Slice. A blade is sticking out of my stomach, it missed my heart but even with the endurance of a bear I only have a couple of minutes of blood left, if I’m lucky. Another enemy goes down but I'm now surrounded, the wound doesn’t hurt, yet. I pick up my greataxe, ducking under another sword, as I start running trying to reach a better position. A man's scream is heard from inside a house next to the town square and I lose my focus for a second as I see a guard going head to head with a group of enemies while standing in a pile of both ally and enemy, he’s about to die and he knows it. The rest of my group has joined up with a couple of guards and holding their ground against the horde, I make it to them and once again focus on the fight. As I'm bringing down another enemy I see a shard of ice fly into the enemy hoard, it explodes into a white cloud that fills the air around the enemies for a couple of seconds before setting, revealing the entire group dead, too cold to bleed. Apparently, Crater is good for things other than reading old books. The remaining enemies start fleeing and we start running after them. My handaxe sinks into the shoulder of the one I'm chasing, but she keeps running. As I catch up to her again she falls to her knees and starts begging for her life. breathe out. It's over, the enemy is defeated and we're still standing. A wave of relief washes over me as I knock out the figure in front of me with the flat side of my axe. As I'm tying up the unconscious soldier the pain starts to catch up, the wound on my stomach is gone so I must have been healed during the battle, however, several others cover my body, I can’t remember getting most of them. Walking back to the town square I notice all the details that got lost during the heat of the battle, guards were strewn about the street, puddles of blood everywhere, an open door revealing the corpses of two commoners. It's a massacre, but how? How did the creatures get out of the excavation site?   How did the creatures get out of the excavation site? And why now. I put down the unconscious body next to the well, the guards can choose what to do with her. Then the realisation hits me, fuck, Fuck, FUCK, the coin, it opened up the excavation site to the rest of the city. We let them out, this is our fault. The world starts spinning as I sit down and start cleaning my axes, hundreds of thoughts are going through my head, how could I be so stupid? How could I forget about the coin? What's gonna happen now? I look down at my axe, there's not a stain of blood left on it, I keep cleaning it nonetheless as I try to hold back the tears.
