Unlike other learners of magic shamans don't hold the ability to manipulate it but learn rituals to perform.
They carry tomes written in an obscure language that's only taught to shamans. They learn new abilities through studying other writing, these writings can be found in old ruins, in other shamans books or be passed on by word of mouth.
Most of the public view them negatively once they were classified separately from other mages. This has reduced their publicity as most are told about through rumours the kingdoms are too lazy to follow. This is the way most get their customers. Adventurer make up a large base of their visits as they are easy to do something the kingdom would dispise.

The tomes used to store and teach the rituals and knowledge are ancient and require a deep understanding of the Shamans tongue, a language that appears like gibberish to non-speakers.
