Elves

Basic Information

Anatomy

In many ways, elves resemble humans. Though appearance varies per species, they always have pointed ears.

Genetics and Reproduction

Elves reproduce the same way as humans do and can even have human children. These are called "half-elves" and in many ways resemble their elf parent. In most cases, they keep their magic abilities, but lose their superior hearing and eyesight. Though in some cases, this is the other way around.

Growth Rate & Stages

Elves age the same ways humans do, though they do live slightly longer, till about the age of 90.

Ecology and Habitats

Elves come in 3 species, named after their habitat, they are:
  • Forestieres (forest elves)
  • Rivieres (river elves)
  • Montagnaires (mountain elves)
Though these describe their origin. Through migration and slave trade, elves can be found anywhere on the continent these days. Especially in their free republics, or in Merlandia, where they worked as servants and slaves for the Empire.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Elves have better eye sight and hearing than humans. They are able to see in the dark as well, as long as the darkness isn't caused by a magical effect. Elves also are the only species to hold magical powers, which led to acts of discrimination and genocide in the past. The kind of magic they can use, varies per species.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Elves generally use French naming customs. With last names usually indicating their profession or place they come from. Exceptions are always possible.

Major Organizations

The Free Elf Republics.

Beauty Ideals

Generally, female elves like to put flowers in their hair (except mountain elves). White dresses, with green and blue accents are seen as the current fashion trend.   For males, beards are frowned upon as they indicate laziness. Generally, they wear brown and green.

Gender Ideals

Generally, women and men are seen as equal, with both genders tasked with looking after a child. In war, female soldiers are common and aren't frowned upon. Generally though, female tend to fulfill more intellectual roles with men doing heavy labour.

Courtship Ideals

In elf societies, there's no bias in romance towards one gender. Either can make the first move. Giving flowers to a man is seen as equally romantic. This is very shocking to some humans.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

All types of Elves speak the same language, namely Francoise.

Common Etiquette Rules

Generally, elves are hospitable towards each other, though they do tend to be distrustful towards other races because of past racism.   Elves can be quite blunt, with honesty preferred over lying.

Common Taboos

Murder is seen as a big taboo in elf society, hence why there is no death penalty. Corruption and unnecessary violence are frowned upon as well.

History

The history of elves is a tragic one. In the days of old, there have always been more humans than elves and from the first encounter onwards, they were seen as "weird", things quickly became worse when humans found out about their magical abilities.    Some started witch hunts after them... Others? Profited from the hostility towards them and made them slaves. This is the reason elves, though not big in population, can be found all over the world.   Vampires treated elves just the same, though generally, they made them servants instead of slaves. In vampire society, they are generally given more respect than humans, who are seen as food and cheap, dumb labour force. At the turn of the 18th century however, elves managed to establish their own republics and enslaving elves is now frowned upon and illegal in some countries.   In the Empire, they continue to serve as servants and advisors to vampire lords. In the Republic, slavery was declared illegal when the revolution broke out and elves and humans have been fighting and living side by side... Though it has been an uneasy alliance from time to time. Many humans and elves want to come closer together and learn from each other... Others prefer to keep to their own.
