Maradiel Strait
The Maradiel Strait, an 18-kilometer stretch of serene water, forms the southern mouth of Khasemar into the ocean Leviatharis. Its placid and calm demeanor belies the intense geopolitical importance it holds as the primary gateway for maritime commerce across the remnant-states of the Sarentek Confederation. Arching across its breadth is the ancient Gate of Tichyon, a marvel of Sarenteki engineering, which still stands, enduring and functional in spite of the scarcity of crium.
Guarding the strait are the two intertwined monarchies of Tiralia and Sarachor. These two kingdoms, bound by blood through intermarriage within their royal families, jointly command a robust professional military and a formidable naval force. Together, they ensure mutual protection while maintaining a firm grip over the waters of the strait. The primary form of control they exert upon the strait is through a toll leveraged from ships seeking passage, the specific fee varying depending on the category and tonnage of the ship, with larger ships and trade vessels paying a more expensive toll.
The importance of the Maradiel Strait as the only maritime access to Khasemar, combined with the toll scheme imposed by Tiralia and Sarachor, has ignited economic tension and sporadic naval skirmishes. Yet, the toll has proven a lucrative venture, fostering prosperity for both nations, and coincidentally all remnant-states on the other side of the strait. In response, some merchants have resorted to overland transport or rerouting their goods to coastal states beyond the control of the two monarchies, with varying degrees of success.
Beyond its strategic importance, the Maradiel Strait and the Gate of Tichyon hold cultural significance for the people of Sarentekia. The Gate, a living testament to the might of the former Sarentek Confederation, serves as a bulwark against external naval threats. Today, it stands as one of the few intact relics from a bygone era of greatness and prosperity.
In the larger geopolitical arena, the Fyrelorn Order's influence is limited in this region. Magic is tolerated to a greater degree here, and any attempts by the Fyrelorn to increase their control are met with staunch resistance. However, they would certainly like to control the strait to better exert their influence across Sarentekia, a desire that remains unfulfilled due to their current limitations. The Maradiel Strait thus continues to serve as a critical artery for commerce, a hotspot of regional tension, and a cultural symbol for the Sarenteki people.
