Transport Disk

Normally it takes some time to experience life-threatening danger. In Richardia it took me three days before I ended up in a shady alley and harassed by thugs. In Uphratus it took two days before a local shopkeeper challenged me to a duel because I mocked his goods.   The Astral Tower surprised me. I barely stepped off my ship, when my life was almost ended prematurely by a metal cylinder falling from the sky and coming down, swallowed by the sea. As I found out later this was a rare occurrence. This metal object, shay alshaba as they call it, is one of the state's primary transport systems. They are used to transport goods throughout the state, normally being far more reliable than my first experience might imply.

Power Generation

At the center of the lower steel disk lies a magical battery made with obsidian and crystals. The vehicle cannot generate its own energy and is dependent on regular recharges. These must be performed by a competent magician who has mastered the art of power transfer.   It is possible to load the disk with a larger battery, which greatly diminishes its carrying capacity but allows it to travel for days, instead of hours.

Propulsion

The magical battery uses its power to form the air around the disk into a pillar below it. This is used to push it upwards, once high in the air, the battery automatically generates more wind to push the disk into the proper direction.

Armor and defense

Normally the disk is built with steel, making it both stable and hard to bring down. Most weapons available to inhabitants of the Astral Tower simply lack the power to penetrate five centimeters of steel. The only exception not incredibly rare are other mages who can manipulate the disks battery or commands.   Attempts were made to use wood or other, lighter materials instead. They were too brittle to withstand the wind and weather, not to mention the attacks of those wishing to capture their cargo. Later attempts determined that using steel was more efficient than enchanting lesser materials to have the same properties.

Sensors

If the disk does not follow any of the predetermined flight paths, it needs a farsight eye. This is a minor spell that must be refreshed every three days, or every seven if it can draw power from the battery. The spell allows the disk to "see" anything in diameter of sixty meters. It can be occasionally unreliable, especially bad weather and heavy traffic take their toll on the system.   It is possible for a mage to assume direct control of the disk, removing the need for any sensors. This method is inefficient, as the disk can only operate properly when in close proximity to the controller, making it useless as a transport vehicle.
