Fiends and Other Creatures

Some things you see won't quite fit into animal, insect, or plant. Some other things to look out for. --Ymir   Undead: previous explorers have reported shambling corpses of animals and sometimes people in the forests, especially Whitepine Woods. We're still unsure what might be raising them. Take care if you see such creatures --while an injured direwolf has the sense to flee, an undead wolf will be relentless until put down.

Ghosts: Lingering souls of the dead appear in the Wilds from time to time. Some are hostile, others are just lost.

Hags: Witches who've gone down a wicked path. The appearance of a hag depends on where she drew her power from; popular image is a hideously ugly woman decorated with bones and foul symbols but throughout history many have met a strangely alluring young woman, only to discover the truth too late. There have been incidents where a hag (or worse, a coven) lays claim to a phosphor tree. They will try to make you bargain with them for the seeds. Be wary, they're not known to deal fairly.

Pact fiend: When a warlock loses hope in their pact's purpose, or the pact becomes impossible to complete, the magic binding the mortal and spirit destabilize. Pact fiends are monsters born of intense emotions; they become utterly lost in grief or anger.

Ogres and trolls: Mountain-dwelling maneaters. Tend to go in vicious cycles of hating each other, to working together on hunts, to hating each other again when it's time to split up the spoils.
  • Supposedly, trolls were once orcs. The oral histories claim there was once a settlement in the mountains, but infighting broke out when part of the tribe started to advocate for a 'kill and eat the weak' approach to their own people. The settlement was destroyed, and the rest of the orcish people traveled away from what they considered 'a cursed site.'
  • Ogres were the creation of a bheur hag to protect her home while she was off spreading misfortune. Upon the hags death, a few of the remaining ogres escaped into the wild and formed their own hierarchies based on size and brute strength.
