Small Fairy

These beings seem to sit at the overlap between weird wildlife and fairies. They are not so obviously civilized as fairies, but they are also usually more humanoid than the weird wildlife. Sometimes limited tool usage is seen amongst them, but they do not seem to use true languages to communicate, as least as far as anyone can tell. But maybe they just haven't bothered to listen.   They are called small fairies because--surprise surprise--they are invariably less than a foot tall. No one has ever found a true fairy or monster that small.   Small fairies often imperfectly mimic ordinary animals in an attempt to deceive their many predators. Sometimes, as in the case of the Acorn People, this backfires--a major cause of death amongst them is infection resulting from bites by greedy or nearsighted squirrels. Others use more traditional camouflage--such as the Gloams, tiny reptilian beings that blend into the shadows thanks to their subtly-patterned hides.   Gnomes, though much more humanoid that most small fairies, are still considered part of the group. Gnomes are tiny people, about as close to the Victorian idea of fairies as anything gets in Menagerie. They do more or less wear clothes and use some tools, but no one has ever discerned a Gnomish language and experts ridicule the idea of a Gnomish culture. They are massive garden pests--especially the Bile Gnomes and the Deer Gnomes. There are also the Exploding Gnomes, but the less said about them the better.   Fairies and monsters regard small fairies with deep hostility, and even when not eating them some will take pains to stamp out local populations. Humans are not much better.   As a rule they have a strong instinct for following ley lines.
