The Makiya and Miigwan islands had enjoyed peace for many years, spending tens of thousands of years undisturbed. Like all peace, it seems, it wasn't made to last. About eighty years ago, the first foreign explorers made their landfall on Makiya's fertile soil. The explorers were grand and inquisitive, and initially seemed quite friendly toward the Makiyashe people. They shared their many ideas and inventions between the two people. However, word spread to other nations of Makiya's bountiful lands, and so more nations came to lay their claim. Dimera, a large country in its own right, took up arms to take this land before anyone else. The Makiyashe race met these invaders with retaliation in a conflict now referred to as the "Burning Plains War". The toll of war was high, and both sides paid greatly.   In the odorous plumes of war, a peculiar event happened that suddenly changed Makiya forever. The very sky turned black, taking the sun, moon, clouds, and even the many stars with it. Shadows washed over the Makiyashe people's land, never to see the sky again. It was as if Makiya had been plucked from the very world, and every single soul of animals, people, and even the wana'ghe was taken with it. The Makiyashe people were now free of foreigners... forever.   Life would change. This event came to be known as the "Dark Times," describing Makiyashe life up to the present. The island is now shrouded in absolute darkness, with only manmade light to show the way. To counteract this, the Keepers of the Plains were erected; giant stone statues that bring what light they can to the dark plains. Because of the lack of a sun and moon, there are no more seasons. However, despite that fact, the plains still experience a moderate level of heat, though not as much as the characteristic blistering heat of centuries past.   The people of Mayika were scattered when darkness fell, and stayed scattered even when the Keepers cast their light. Tribes and villages congregated to these Keepers, as the light cast from them would help nurture life from the dark, fertile soil. Despite living the dark lands, many Makiyashe try to remain optimistic. Still, there are many tribes that have grown differently in their separated communities. Even camps of foreigners remain, carrying on some shadow of their former lifestyle.   The world may be dark, but it is still a lighthearted game. While many serious events around you will be quite serious, the game will still maintain lighthearted and maybe even silly moments.
