Dwarves

The dwarven races origin is lost to the depths of time. Quite literally as their most ancient legends involve their ancestors crawling up out of the Forgotten Ways to a world full of elven kingdoms. Dwarven society has long been one of stoicism and honor. Dwarves are hardy folk living deep in hewn tunnels and cavernous halls. Standing shorter than most other races dwarves are historically proud to a fault. When dealing with other races a dwarf may take offense at slights others don't understand or even at things the dwarf themself would overlook from one of their own.   Dwarves are a stocky sturdy race, though they have their short, tall, thin, and broad members all of them tend toward the shorter and broader side than other races. All dwarves have facial hair, while this is quite appalling to some other races to dwarves it is the unseemly nakedness of others faces that is revolting. While dwarven hair can be found in all colors it tends toward earth tones, rich soil, red rocks, the black of basalt or the pale yellow of a beaches sand, all can be found. A dwarf ceases to shave whatever stubble they may have grown upon reaching man/woman hood (30 in most clans) they then wear it loose until they are wed when men begin to braid their beards according to their deeds and women may curl or straighten theirs as they choose and fashion dictates. Ornamentation is strictly based on honor and accomplishment whether in battle, trade, politics, or elsewhere in dwarven society beads, metalwork, ribbons, and ties are used to show a dwarfs accomplishments. All dwarves keep their head shaved until the birth of their firstborn whereupon they grow it to whatever length they choose. Usually their job dictates this with those who work in forges mines or on the battlefield preferring it short and those in less hands on jobs choosing elaborate stylings.   Dwarven culture is full of traditions focused on reproduction largely because it is difficult for them. Each dwarf is hard pressed to become a parent to at least two children as dwarven gestation is very long compared to most and the cycles for both males and females can take years to properly align. This can mean many arranged marriages as families attempt to choose compatible mates rather than worrying about feelings or social standing. While dwarves are very private with outsiders there is not much to be kept from the families in a dwarf clan. Dwarf women also do not have larger breasts than the men as dwarves do not breastfeed. Children grow teeth and a soft downy hair en utero and are capable of taking in solid foods from birth.   Traditionally dwarves have been loosely grouped by their relative proximity to the outside world. "Mountain" dwarves are those from deep in the rock. They tend to be those closest to the stereotype most other races hold for dwarves. These dwarves are largely distrustful of others even among their own kind and seldom speak anything other than Dwarvish even if they are perfectly capable of doing so.   "Hill" dwarves are those that live close enough to other races to do business and such. Their society is less traditional than other dwarves, though it may not appear so to outsiders. Many hill dwarves may bend traditional styles to be more conventional for other races though some do exactly the opposite. Hill dwarf society often shows the influence of those around them. Most ancient hill dwarf traditions and constructions show the touch of elven culture, either as an emulation or an aggressive reaction. Current hill dwarves are those that live highest in Go'Rim and those that populate the ports of the dwarven stronghold. They are obviously dwarves and their low stone buildings and piers shaped of solid rock reflect this but they also show the touch of the world. Taverns and inns in Go'Rim ports are as diverse and hospitable as those anywhere in the world.   In very recent dwarvish society a new delineation of dwarf has been taking form. The "sea" dwarves now united under the clan name Saltbeards are a strange and uncomfortable addition to the earth dwelling race. When dwarves were driven from Pacet late in the human empires conquest the fled across the sea in a desperate bid for survival. Never before had dwarves willingly taken to ship in such numbers. Out of this some few discovered a love for the sea. Dwarves who before had been outsiders among their own, feeling cramped or confined by society and life beneath ground suddenly found that the rolling deck of a ship felt right to them. These dwarves gradually formed the first ship crews of the new island nation of Go'Rim and became the new division of sea dwarves. Sea dwarves have quickly adapted to their roles showing great aptitude for standing firm on a rolling deck or clinging to a mast or wheel in a storm. Additionally a trend has been seen in those who felt the call of the sea. These dwarves are tall for their kind and tend toward darker skin tones and eyes. Their hair has been said to have the faintest hints of green or blue and their eyes sometimes sparkle like sunlight on water. Whatever the case sea dwarves now form a large part of dwarvish society out of necessity as the island nation thrives on trade and defends itself from the sea.
