The eldest vanishes at sea, and the younger takes control of the noble house.

The eldest and heir to the House of Suvrata, Rosetta, vanishes at sea following a storm that split the fleet into pieces. She survived, along with a few members of the original crew that were forced to defend themselves after her younger sister ordered the captain and crew to kill Rosetta Suvrata. Upon returning home, Mariah took control of the Suvrata House, beginning a financially disastrous reign as the woman, unused to responsibility and power, spends funds wildly while her parents remain in mourning for their elder child. Rosetta changes her last name to Smith, knowing that she can't return home without a fight, and instead remaining in the Brosha Islands, ultimately becoming a pirate.
