Vigil Clocktower
The Vigil Clocktower is the tallest building in the city, towering over the skyline of the Northern Bright Bay District. It was built in 1520 by master clockmaker Fernindo Santastarra, who was sent all the way up to Gardinya Lyra by the Queen and Capitol specifically to finish off the clock tower part of the building. The building is made up of light grey marble, with a moonstone and gold clockface. All four sides are covered in arches like there should be windows there, but instead, there were arrow slits, making this as one of the few obsessively defensive structures in the city.
The Clocktower is staffed by at least two security soldiers at all times, on the observation deck at the top of the clocktower. It is their job to watch for signal fires from the beyond mountains. Even though the fae kingdom has not seen war in over 200 years, the city council has refused to relax this ritual and let civilians come up to see the top of the clock tower. Gardinya Lyra is the only fae city that has never been ceased in war, and the council refuses to let that happen on their watches.
The clocktower also provides the important function of keeping the official time of the city. The clock chimes the hour, on the hour, and then ding every quarter hours, in a bright clear sound that can be heard city wide. Every year on Clock Day (7.15) the clock is taken offline for the day to be serviced and completely cleaned, and many people note how eariely quiet the city is that day. It's also the only day of the year where it is socially acceptable to be late to things (as their is no clock to guide people).
