Mana

You live in a world called Mana. Despite what the name may imply, magic has never been incredibly common or very potent throughout the world. However, after the events of 14 years ago: the Hole in the World, a cataclysmic event in which an almost endless hole appeared, swallowing an infamous group known as the Black Dawn, the conditions of this world have changed.   Almost as if leaking from the hole into the world itself, magic in Mana has become extremely potent. Although not necessarily more common, with the increased potency more people with the ability to wield magic in some capacity have begun to surface. Some have started to call these people the ‘Gifted’, as though Mana itself is choosing people to bless.   The cause of the Hole, or its relation to all of the magic flooding into the world is unknown. All that has been confirmed by the World Capital is that the group of criminals, the Black Dawn, had something to do with it, and that they were punished by Mana itself. Although the increase in magical potency originating from the Hole is not in itself regarded as something bad, an incredibly large section of the country that the Hole formed in has become inhospitable and the land itself has begun to turn black.     14 Years later, in our current time, people have gotten used to the Gifted and for the most part the random appearance of magic within people has stopped manifesting albeit there are still occasional cases. Due to the land that the hole appeared in becoming so devoid of resources, it was made almost entirely inaccessible within a year of the cataclysm by order of the World Capital. Almost nothing is publicly known about the situation of the land since then.   There are groups, regarded by some as brave, others stupid, that attempt to journey into the hole to find the source of it and all that it has caused. And although there are rumors as to what it is, and what is down the hole, nothing has ever been confirmed.
