Gnomes

Within Thalassar, there are the stubborn, artistic dwarves, and the flexible, inventive and literal gnomes. They are a very energetic people, and often provide as good working partners with the dwarves. Millenia ago, the gnomes ancient home was razed to the ground by orcs and goblins, and they desperately fled down the mountains. The dwarves took them in, and they've been living together in harmony since the Iron Plague.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Gnomes are smaller than dwarves, but larger than halflings. Some more insulting individuals would call them "discount dwarves", something they don't take to very well. Gnomes do, however, share more similarities with the dwarves than they do the halflings.

Growth Rate & Stages

Gnomes mature at the same rate humans do, and most are expected to settle down into an adult life by around age 40. They can live 350 to almost 500 years.

Facial characteristics

Gnomes are known for big noses, similar to halflings, but whereas halflings' noses are more thick and round, gnome noses are often pointy, sharp and triangular.
Contrary to halflings, gnomes also have a much easier time growing facial hair.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Gnomes are situated almost solely in Thalassar and the dwarven barrens. A few gnome travelers pop up here and there in Malkor but they are focused in the dwarven lands.

Gnomes are often more intelligent on average than other sapients on Malkor.

Naming Traditions

Gnomes love names, and most have half a dozen or so. A gnome’s mother, father, clan elder, aunts, and uncles each give the gnome a name, and various nicknames from just about everyone else might or might not stick over time. Gnome names are typically variants on the names of ancestors or distant relatives, though some are purely new inventions. When dealing with humans and others who are “stuffy” about names, a gnome learns to use no more than three names: a personal name, a clan name, and a nickname, choosing the one in each category that’s the most fun to say.   15   HANDOUT | GOLIATH, GNOME Example Male Names. Average Technological Level

Together with the dwarves they have among the highest possible technological achievements in hygiene and transport, having designed elaborate transporation systems throughout the cave systems of Thalassar.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Gnomes speak gnomish, a language which sounds quite different from dwarvish. Some words have been loaned from dwarvish, but otherwise the languages are distinct.

Common Etiquette Rules

Gnomes are most often good. Those who tend toward law are sages, engineers, researchers, scholars, investigators, or inventors. Those who tend toward chaos are minstrels, tricksters, wanderers, or fanciful jewelers. Gnomes are good-hearted, and even the tricksters among them are more playful than vicious.

History

Where gnomes came from is not known, but they once lived in smaller tribes across the barrens. When the goblins invaded Thalassar they razed many of the gnome residences and took them capture, and the survivors escaped to Thalassar, where they aided in its defense. Those freed along with the hill dwarves resettled the barrens, while those who fled to Thalassar found a home there.

Compared to their close neighbours the dwarves, gnomes are quite weak. They are on average weaker even than halflings.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Gnomes' skin color can be a vibrant pink, but often goes towards a greyish undertone, or even so far as having actually grey skin.

Darkvision. Accustomed to life underground, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Gnome Cunning. You have advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against magic.
Artificer’s Lore. Whenever you make an Intelligence (History) check related to Magic Items, alchemical Objects, or technological devices, you can add twice your proficiency bonus, instead of any proficiency bonus you normally apply.
Tinker. You have proficiency with artisan’s tools (tinker’s tools). Using those tools, you can spend 1 hour and 10 gp worth of materials to construct a Tiny clockwork device (AC 5, 1 hp). The device ceases to function after 24 hours (unless you spend 1 hour repairing it to keep the device functioning), or when you use your action to dismantle it; at that time, you can reclaim the materials used to create it. You can have up to three such devices active at a time. When you create a device, choose one of the following options:

  • Clockwork Toy: This toy is a clockwork animal, monster, or person, such as a frog, mouse, bird, dragon, or Soldier. When placed on the ground, the toy moves 5 feet across the ground on each of your turns in a random direction. It makes noises as appropriate to the creature it represents.
  •  
  • Fire Starter: The device produces a miniature flame, which you can use to light a Candle, torch, or campfire. Using the device requires your action.
  •  
  • Music Box: When opened, this music box plays a single song at a moderate volume. The box stops playing when it reaches the song’s end or when it is closed.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Gnomish. The Gnomish language, which uses the Dwarvish script, is renowned for its technical treatises and its catalogs of knowledge about the natural world.
