The Four Moons

Makkah has not one but four moons, one for each season. They are the masks the Moon Spirit wears to hide his face. It is said that one day his true face will be shown and that will be the beginning of the end of all things as they are known.     The spring moon's name is Abeytu and is a pale green but glows a soft yellow.   Hinto is the summer moon and glows a dark blue, making it difficult to see in the dark but for the silver afterimages it leaves behind as it treks across the night sky.   The autumn moon, Sanuye, glows currant red. It is nicknamed the Blood Eye.   And Takhi, the winter moon, is usually a quiet lavendar but occasionally is the color of bison fat--white with a red-amber tint. Pale Takhis are considered omens of ill luck and storms to come, nights not to go hunting or raiding or anything that could bring misfortune down on the family band.
