North of the Wall

The Giant's Wall has long been seen as an impassable boundary, a challenge to those who want to explore the northernmost reaches of Hylden. What it truly is, though, is a wall, the last border before the only true waste of Maeovis.   High in the wall is the last town of the north, called Thevoya. It is assulted by a near constant winter and is barely protected from the true dangers of the north by the highest peaks of the mountains. Originally an outpost for travelers on their way north, it is now a warning beacon for the lands south of the wall. The land beyond the Giant's Wall is a frozen rocky tundra assulted by near-constant snowstorms and high winds. Few animals from the south of the wall survive in the north, save for a few bears, deer, and rabbits. The true denizens of the north are wild dragons, thought to be the last living dragons in Maeovis. There are rumors that there are greater and more dangerous creatures living there, but no one knows whether to believe them. One folktale spread by mages visiting Thevoya is that it is the material prison of Teruna, goddess of storms. The wild winds of the wall prevent drake-riders from traveling north of the mountains, as they are nearly always blown off course. Those that have seen glimpses of the land beyond the wall claim it is a vast and rocky flatland covered in ice, with lakes bluer than any seen on the inhabited side of the wall.   The north creates many strange phenomenons that are the source of folklore and myth. The mountains and clouds produce a low rumbling, described by some inhabitants of Thevoya as "near constant". They are different in sound to the dragons' rare roars, which sound shrill and cutting above the rest of the noise. Occasionally, a dragon will fly close enough to Thevoya to be seen as shadows in the fog. The villagers call these "spiritsights", and spend a day in watchful vigil when they occur.   Should the dragons ever come near enough to be seen clearly, the town of Thevoya is prepared. Wyvern-riders are ready to fly into warning at any moment, and the town itself is the last of a chain of outposts with beacons ready, a warning of fire and light braced against the coming storm.
