Maelon

Maelon is a world which until recent times has seen aeons of peace. Even the last wars are a distant memory to the world. Monster sightings were a rarity in the lives of most, almost never being found anywhere near civilisation. Of course, the world wasn't perfect, but strife was usually on a smaller scale and almost always resolved eventually. However, a single day almost six hundred years ago marked the end of this peace as thundering earthquakes shook all over the world, and the Gyre came to be.   The origins of the event known as the Gyre are still unknown, but its effects are far from hidden. On cue with the world-shaking tremors a huge sinkhole swallowed up a massive portion of the ocean between Maelon’s Great Kingdoms. The world seemed to cave in on itself, creating an unfathomably deep trench and atop it a deadly whirlpool that to the current day still engulfs any ships or creatures who venture too near.   The Gyre not only took many lives, both on sea and land, but also marked the beginning of a strange change in the world. After this event people began to notice many more monsters roaming close to civilisation, some even harassing smaller towns and villages. While nobody can be sure, people have different opinions as to what caused this, ranging from mundane science to divine wrath. One certainty however is that this influx of dangerous beasts and troubles means many more individuals are looking to adventurers for aid.
