Personal history

Kaius was born into a world that would be trouble for him. A tiefling with small horns and great wings marked him to be seen as an outcast from most of society. His mother, a human woman named Mary, fearing for her young son's life, fled the city she grew up in and found peace on a small farm several miles away from a village, where she could keep her son hidden, often leaving him at home alone while she went to the village. Kaius hated those moments. At the age of four, while his mother was doing business with a local fisherman, a retired elf soldier named Ruven, Kaius found his first friend, a young half-elf by the name of Almorn. The two were inseperable the first few years, playing whenever Almorn's father came to do business. While knowledgeable about farm life, Kaius would often grow bored with it, and eventually managed to talk his mother to let him go out into the village once in a while. While the eldest of the village often didn't care for the young tiefling, the younger generations held a view that ranged from curiosity and interest to disgust, depending on the parent and grandparent. Kaius would enjoy the village trips, even if he had to contend with whispers behind his back. One exception was when a group of individuals came into town and chased Kaius, who had managed to seperate himself from his mother, across the village and into the woodland. Only the timely intervention of Ruven saved Kaius. After the two got home, Ruven took it upon himself to train Kaius in self defense and flight. This allowed Ruven and Mary to grow closer, and they eventually wed. After his mother married her husband, she bore a half-elf child, Sylrora, much to Kaius' delight. The young girl took an instant liking to her elder brother, clinging to his warm skin during cold winter months. Kaius also started to be taught by a private tutor. As Kaius grew older, his step-father took both of his sons out to fish and train. While Kaius enjoyed these trips, he could never find a fighting or magic style suited to him until a strange, old man wandered into the village, a gunsmith. The gunsmith found Kaius to be a curious and willfull student, and taught him about the danger and responsibility of the weapon. While Ruven disapproved of the weapon in general, he decided it was, ultimately, harmless. One night, when Kaius was in his late teens, Sylrora accidentally knocked a bag of gunpowder near the fireplace. Kaius managed to put himself in between his sister and the resulting explosion, badly damaging his left arm in the process. Several days later, he found himself able to understand gunsmithing and gun work in a level that astounded him, an innate magic now in his blood. Kaius also made it a habit to keep his tools away from others. Sylrora eventually got her own tutor, a young woman named Sara. Kaius and Sara struck up a fast friendship with each other, which grew to one sided romance on Sara's part. Kaius attempted to break the friendship, but Sara insisted on keeping it, eventually realizing that Kaius wasn't into her. They remained friends, and Sara started courting Kaius' brother instead. On a journey to the city, Kaius and Almorn were attacked by a religious group, specifically to target Kaius. Kaius was knocked unconscious during the fight and woke up to find his brother missing. He refuses to go home until his brother is found.

Education

Kaius has never had much in the way of educational opportunity and as such lacks the ability to read/write beyond that of a child consequently his ability to perform basic math is little above what you would expect a child's. What education he has received is from a human woman named Sara additionally, he has some knowledge about agricultural practices (primarily animal products).
