Lumi

Lumi, also known as the Hearth Child, Daughter of the Cold and Winter's Warmth is a deity of the hearth, hospitality, winter, maple trees, and snow.

Appearance

Lumi is often depicted as a young grimalkin with orange eyes, white hair and bushy white fur on her tails and ears. She is often shown wearing a variety of heavy clothing such as furs, coats, hats, and scarves. In one hand she carries a large branch of maple which she uses as a walking stick. The top of this maple branch is usually depicted as being aflame representing her hearth.

Commandments

  • Always share your hearth with those in need of its warmth. All deserve warmth on a cold winter's day.
  • Care for the ill and weak; offer sanctuary to the lost.
  • Treat others with the kindness, warmth, and compassion of the hearth.

Worship

Lumi is worshipped across Luxilice in any climate that experiences winter and cold temperatures. She is seen as the opposite of her mother Icia. Where her mother is the bitter cold of frost, she is the warmth of the hearth that protects against it.   Even amongst those who are not her direct followers, her day of worship upon the Winter Solstice known as Hearthsmeed is often practised. Upon this day, which is often the coldest of the year, families and friends gather around their hearths, using maple for the fuel and giving small offerings of food to the goddess by throwing it into the fire. They then spend the rest of the day in the company of one another: drinking and feasting, celebrating, and giving handmade gifts and trinkets to family and friends.   Another common form of worship for the goddess is the construction of sculptures made of snow, known as snowmen or islumi. Typically constructed of two differently sized balls of snow placed atop one another, a smaller one on top, larger one on the bottom. They are decorated in a variety of ways. Usually, large leaves, most of the time maple, are used to represent ears on the top ball of snow with small pebbles or other round objects for eyes. The small sculpture is then given any warm clothing that the family or individual can spare. The construction of this sculpture is said to grant the goddess's blessing to those who cannot always remain by the hearth. This practice has also become widespread across Luxilice, with many participating in creating islumi and praying for the goddess's protection.
