Magdama

"Magdama, the abyssal sea. Far beneath our waters, far below the crush depth for our machines, lies a sea who's namesake comes from its ruler. It is told that Magdam endlessly patrols her realm, ending the lives of any interlopers who dare trespass. Of course the Consulate knows about it! They're just keeping it secret so we don't try to go down there!"
-Toreni Conspiracy Theorist

Summary

Since the dawn of Toreni-kind, the legend of Magdama has remained with Toreni culture. It is theorized that Magdama can be accessed through volcanic vents on the ocean floor, though no such attempt to pass through them has ever proven successful.   Magdama is supposedly an abyssal sea made of hot, alkaline water. A large entity is thought to patrol Magdama known as Magdam. Magdam's nature is still up in the air, but one thing the culture's agree upon is that she will smite any trespasser who enters her realm. Magdama is similar to the lost city of Atlantis, and it is thought Magdam guards vast riches beyond imagination.

Historical Basis

Logs recovered from Scholar databanks mention an underwater facility on Tor, though it is unclear whether it is referring to Magdama or some other underwater facility.

Spread

The legend of Magdama is pervasive in Toreni culture. Any Toreni who hasn't lived under a rock their entire life has probably heard of it in some way either through consumable media or word of mouth.

Variations & Mutation

Magdama itself remains static throughout Toreni culture, but the nature of Magdam is still up for debate. Some believe she may be a god-like being, immaterial in nature. Others believe she might be a massive sea-creature. Still others believe Magdam may be a massive, ancient construct left in Magdama by the Scholars long ago.

Cultural Reception

Cultures who haven't been exposed to the works of the Scholars tend to show disbelief when the legend of Magdama is brought up. However, those who have witnessed the works of the Scholars tend to agree and have similar stories and legends to share.

In Literature

Magdama is frequently used as a goal in heroic epics in Toreni literature. The legend has also been adapted by Neo-Religious groups as a sort of "hell."

In Art

Archaeologists frequently uncover statues of a large, angelic being who is thought to be Magdam herself.
