Luminary's Fairy Bottle

A Radiant Refuge in the Darkest Days

Item created by Tyler Blancett, AwesomeCreator on WorldAnvil. Aspiring writer and tabletop content creator. Feedback appreciated! :)
This stoppered, magical container has a natural luminescence, as the perpetual moon within the demiplane gives off a shimmering radiance. A pair of lunar spirits, Noctis and Lunaris, watch over this safehaven, which has enough space and furnishings to house up to twelve medium-sized creatures. These furnishings include two cabins, a barn, and a plot of land with a magically flowing river, and a lunar tree of ever-bearing fruit.   When a creature makes a pact with the spirits within, they are able to be sucked into the magical demiplane within- a lush meadow with a perpetual twilight sky, where the the guardians Noctis and Lunaris watch over resting or wounded creatures. As long as a creature holds true to the pact made with the pair of spirits, they may shelter themselves and their allies in times of need. The spirits take the form of a spectral doe and a stag, their eyes gleaming with radiance as they peer into the souls of those who seek to use the bottle, weighing their worth.   If an evil entity tries to use the item, or tries to break the bottle or harm those kept safe within its sanctuary, the sprits manifest themselves, protecting their allies with ferver. Should they perish, or the bottle breaks permanently, the spirits still linger within the light of the full moon, with the potential to return their sanctuary to the material plane once again, albeit weaker than before.   Noctis, the Stag Sprit, is calm, wise and gentle, embodying the serenity of the full moon and the stillness of the night. He often speaks in cryptic, philosophical phrases and provides the wielder with subtle guidance when they are uncertain. Noctis values inner peace, healing, and the protection of others. He enourages the weilder to seek or reconciliation or avoid conflict when possible. Compassionate, tranquil and nurturing, he often gives the wielder dreams or visions that provides them insight into their journey or decisions.   Lunaris, the Doe Spirit, a more spirited and protective, embodying the phases of the moon, from the new moon's quiet resolve to the waving moon's growing power. She is fiercely protective of the sanctuary and those who are deemed worthy of its refuge, but she also carries a sense of mystery and foreboding, as if guarding a secret. Lunaris is quick to act when the balance is threatened but values loyalty and strength of will. Protective, determined and fierce, she often takes a more active approach, pushing the wieldiner toward decisive action or encouraging them to face their fears and stand firm against evil.   Together, these spirits represent the balance of calm and action, serenity and defense. They ware not omnipotent, but they are ever-watchful and deeply connected to the sanctity of the Luminary's Fairy Bottle and its magical realm.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

A creature who makes a pact with the pair of spirits inside can use it's sanctuary for iteself and its allies, provided it vows to never break the pact. It can also use additional abilites if it chooses to attune with The Luminary's Fairy Bottle.   AC- 18 (Enchanted Glass)   HP- 75 (Renerates 5 HP/Hour), 20 Temp HP (Cracked State Only)   Resistances- Radiant, Psychic, Necrotic; Nonmagical Bludgeoning, piercing and slashing.   Immunities- Poison, charm, fear   Magic Resistance- The Luminary's fairy bottle has advantage on saving throws against magical effects   Lunar Sancuary- While inside, all inhabitants are shielded from harm, as the bottle and the spirits protect its dwellers until the magic is severed. This magical demiplane has enough space to comfortably fit 12 medium sized creatues, with two cabins, a barn, all the furnishings and anemities to cook, sleep, live and lounge comfortable. There is also open land for creatures to roam, ensuring they have enough space to to move about. During a long rest, a creature who has a pact with the spirits can rearrange the interior to fit their preferred asthetic. The magical tree bears 1d6+1 fruit daily, which act as goodberries. The magically flowing river keeps a constant supply of fresh, drinkable water running perpetually.   If Reduced to 0 HP- The first time the bottle is reduce to 0 HP, it enters a cracked state. If the bottle enters this inert state, it gains 20 temporary hitpoints, and it magically shunts all creatures, items, and the spirits themselves safely outside of the bottle in a 120ft raduis centered around this triggered effect. All creatures who were inside the bottle gain the effect of the sanctuary spell for 1 minute after the bottle enters a cracked state. If it is not destroyed completely, and if the spirits of Noctis and Lunaris remain, the bottle reforms after 3d4 days, albeit weaker, with a permanent 10% reduction to it's max HP.   Noctis and Lunaris will fiercely protect theit allies, acting immediately in their defense. (Unicorn Statistics) They will attack and hostile creatures and shield vulnerable allies, allowing them to escape if possible. If the spirits are defeated in this state, their fractured spirits can be reclaimed, and the bottle restored, with the right materials and magic.   If the bottle has never been broken before, the spirits will eventually recover. The bottle reforms after 3d4 days and takes a 10% permanent decrease to it's maximum HP. In addition, the spirits become cautious and wary, expressing their disappointment in the party for letting harm come to the sanctuary: Lunaris might say: "We trusted you to protect this haven. Do not let us fall again." To which, Noctis might add: "Our strength wanes, and so too will your refuge if we are shattered again."   Bottle Lockdown: The spirits will seal the sanctuary following entering the cracked state, sealing itself for 24 hours. During this time, it is inaccessible to all creatures, including its allies. This reflect their need to "purify" their haven.   Shattering the Bottle: If the bottle is broken a second time, it's temporary HP reduced to 0 after entering the cracked state, or the sprits Noctis and Lunaris are defeated after leaving the bottle for whatever reason, the bottle shatters. If this happens, it's contents are scattered across the material plane, including items and creatures that were inside. The spirits leave essence fragments of themselves, a faint trace of their presence resembling lingering moonlight or spectral hoofprints.   Restoring the Bottle: The Sprit's essence can be restored, but a significant quest must be undertaken in order to reconstruct the magical ritual and container that created the Luminary's Fairy Bottle. This might involve finding the spirit's fragments, recreating the bottle, and even communing with the Lunar Goddess or using her magic in its reconstruction. Creatures must gather rare materials and seek powerful magic, including the bottle's creator, it they still exist. The sprit's must also be found again and a pact must be reforged to solidfy the magic within, though where the sprit's will be is not always static.   Activation: The user can speak the command word to activate or deactivate the bottle.   Stowing Creatures: A creature within 10 feet of the bottle that is friendly to the spirits within can willingly shrink and enter the demiplane. Releasing Creatures: As an action, the user can release any number of stored creatures.   Optional Attunement: A creature can attune to the Luminary's fairy bottle, enabling it's additional features.   Sanctuary Recall (1/long rest): The user can speak the command word to summon the bottle and its contents to their location.   Lunar Ward: (1/long rest): The bottle emits a protective aura for 1 minute when under attack. Creatures within 20 feet of the bottle gain +2 to AC and saving throws.   Radiant Pulse: (1/long rest): The Spirits unleash a burst of radiant energy when the bottle is struck. As a reaction, the wielder can force all creatures it chooses within 20 ft of the attack to make a DC 16 Dextereity saving throw, taking 4d10 radiant damage on a failure, or half that amount on a success.   The Pact: The Lunar Spirits Noctis and Lunaris allow a creature and its allies to use the properties of the bottle and attune to it, so long as they form a pact and follow its tenets. Breaking the pact results in a warning, followed by the spirits ejecting all inhabitants and being shunted into a dimension elsewhere. The three tenets are:   To protect and preserve life   To never use the sanctuary for selfish or evil gain   To never abandon or betray the sprits     Evil Creatures and the Luminary's Fairy Bottle: Lunaris and Noctis do not abide by evil, its machinations, or its persuasions. They do all they can to shelter their allies from ill intentions, though sometimes an evil creature may try to use the Luminary's Fairy Bottle for their own personal gain, rather than destroying it. If a creature of evil alignment tries to use the bottle, or a creature uses it with malicious intentions, the spirits will manifest themselves as a radiant doe and stag. Their glow dims, their expressions harden, and their voices resonate with fury:   "Your heart is unkind. Your hands bring only ruin. We shall not be tools for your darkness." In unison they utter these words, and act in rebellion against those who would seek to misuse their sanctuary:   Rebellion, Curse, Lockdown: A creature of evil alignment attempting to use the bottle must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be incapacitated for 1 minute as visions of the sanctuary's collapse and the spirit's wrath overwhelm them. If the creature fails the save, the sprits unleash a surge of protective energy, ejecting any evil-aligned creatues that may be within the demiplane. Ejected creatues take 6d8 radiant damage (or half as much on a success) and are pushed 30 feet away from the bottle's location. The bottle then enters a lockdown state, and places a Mark of Scorn on the offending creature. For the next 7 days, the creature has disadvantage on Charisma checks, All Saving throws, and spell attacks as the spirts subtly undermine their presence and power. This curse can onlt be removed with a Remove Curse or Greater Restoration Spell.   Lesser Evils: For creatures of a neutral alignment with selfish intent (but not truly evil), the spirits may issue a warning insead of an immediate punishment. For instance: "Your heart wavers, uncertain of it's path. Step lightly, for misuse will awaken the storm." Such creatures might find the bottle harder to use effectively, facing minor hindrances like a longer recharge time, or reduced functionality.

Manufacturing process

The process requires 30 days of work by a master forger, enchanter or artificer. This time is halved with the assistance of a celestial or fey ally. The total cost of materials and service is approximately 25,000gp, reflecting its rarity. This cost assumes the creature can find the materials themselves and only pays for labor and spellcasting services.

History

Noctis and Lunaris, the lunar spirits within this glass bottle, were friends of a great archdruid of the moon, known only as The Luminary, who sought sanctuary for her friends and companions from situations where they wanted to be kept close but could not be present, or to be kept safe from dangerous situations. Though the druid's name has been forgotten due to her hermetic personality since their passing, the bottle has been kept in good hands thanks to the perceptive nature of the spirits within. They continue to make pacts with creatures whose interests align with their former master, as long as they dont serve evil or selfish purposes.   It is said the creator of this item first bonded with the spirits in their native, clestial forms before befriending them and using their magic for good. The Druid travelled the moonlit lands, providing sanctuary to those who sought it, imparting their teachings of community and peace as they sought to protect the land. No one knows what happened to the druid, not even the spirits. However, they carry on the teachings and characteristics their master embodied, seeking to recreate that sense of family with the next bearer of the pact-- something that may never come to pass.   A Story of Harmony, or Containment? There are two competing legends about the spirits within the bottle, and which version is true depends on who you ask:   The Harmony Legend: In this version, the spirits were benevolent being who willingly worked with the bottle's creator. They cherished their role in protecting weary travelers and were granted freedom to roam within their demiplane sanctuary. This version frames them as wise, protective, nurturing.   The Containment Legend: In contrast, this version tells of spirits made volatile by the destruction of their original forms. They were wrathful and vengeful, threatening the mortal plane until The Luminary trapped them within the bottle. Over time, their rage subsided, and they became reluctant guardians, offering sanctuary as a means of atonement.   The truth may never be fully known, as the spirits cannot remember their past, nor can they remember The Luminary's identity; only their teachings, their actions, and their legacy. It pains them to be unable to recall the face of their master, yet this does not stop them from persisting in embodying the teachings this enigmatic figure provided.

Significance

Frederick Smithson and Albert Starson found this item under a moonstone within the walking woods after their arrival and debut, and believe it to be a sign of guidance from the goddess herself. They plan to give this to the new heroes of Mooreview, so it may make their adventures less treacherous. This item is fabled, whispered of in the island, and to find it on the hero's first night seemed a like a sign pointing to their true destiny.. however ludacris.
"Legends tell of the fairy bottle shattering in the past, having said to cause a ripple of magical imbalance across multiple regions."
"Are we taking in even MORE strays, deer?" Asks Lunaris dryly, his radiant antlers knocking loose a lunar fruit a new one immediately beginning to flower. "It's not like we can use the beds inside, now can we?" With a swift retort, Noctis wets her throat in the ever-flowing river. "Besides, remember what master taught us?" Her voice carries an expecting tone, as the radiant stag huffs. In unison, as if drummed into them, they harmonize: "Under moon's glow, where shadows meet, A haven grows for weary feet, Bound by promise, soft and true, A home for hearts, both old and new, Bring forth the light, mend what you can, The smallest spark may heal the land."
"The Luminary's Fairy Bottle shimmers with ethereal light, its surface brimming with radiance, and a carefully etched crescent moon on the stopper. Within lies a tranquil sanctuary watched over by a pair of lunar spirits, whose radiant forms safeguard all who seek refuge. It is a rare artifact imbued with ancient magic, offering respite from a chaotic world."

Author's Notes

This item was previously a purely external force, which my friends and I used in our games to describe how other players, who were not present during previous sessions, were able to rejoin the party. It similarly described what happened to players who were not there the next game. We labeled it as: "They got sucked into the fairy bottle." Based on this, with my time to shine as DM arising in my friend group, I decided to actually create the item: Making it a legendary item with uses and consequences. This item can serve as a powerful tool for DM's and players. For DM's, it can serve as a convenient narration tool for describing how PC's and their pets and companions stay together. It can also serve as a potential plot hook, provide side quests, or pose a conflict if the right (or wrong) NPC sees the party using this powerful item. For players, it can be a means to stow riches, companions, and concoct crazy plans around its mechanics. While the item is obviously incredibly powerful and highly scaled, it is not impervious nor impenetable. Its more to add to the fun of the game, while narratively describing how the party stays together, and giving them a creative outlet to do so. The item also fits my campaign and its narrative well, so there's that. As with anything in DnD, this item can be adjusted to fit any setting or plot. If you have ideas, feedback, or any other comments, I'm all ears, and appreciative of it!!!
