Argos

The Maritime People

Argos is one of the Hyborian kingdoms that rose out of the ashes of Acheron when it fell three thousand years ago. Situated on a coastline with natural sea-ports, the people of Argos have become master sailors, crafty pirates and powerful merchants. Argos is a smaller nation with a population of just over seven million people. Short and stocky, the Argosseans share traits with Zingarans and Shemites, whom the original Hyborian inhabitants have spent centuries marrying and breeding with.

Argos Explored

Argos hosts a diverse group of people, from the liberals in the port cities, such as Messentia, to the more conservative people out in the rural inland provinces of the nation. The roads of Argos are known to be peaceful and nearly every village has an inn for travellers, who are often on their way to one of the nation's busy ports with items for trade, bound for Zingara, Ophir, or Aquilonia. The nation is ruled by a king and is split into fiefs, counties, and baronies. It is more politically stable than most of Hyboria.   Argosseans dress for the climate, which is rather warm. They wear mostly linen, cotton, and light wool, which is often white or in other muted colors. The common Argossean dresses simple and only observes minor style changes, but the style of the wealthy is vastly different. Styles among the rich have been known to change overnight, and are often inspired by those of other cultures. These may break the cultural standards, ending up with vibrant colors or tightly fitted styles of fabrics not often worn, such as silk.   Though known for many things, Argos is famed for its gladitorial games. Slaves and prisoners are made to serve as combatants in the arena, where the audience derives entertainment from them fighting each other or wild animals. These games are sometimes used to settle disputs over land and other such political matters, which ultimately spares peasants from the horrors of war, even if it does require a heavy sum of slaves.   Argos has become an increibly wealty nation due to its position as a trade hub with command of the sea. Merchants numerous in the the coastal nation, but some other common professions that can be found are fishermen, sailors, shipwrights, soldiers, slavetraders, pirates, priests, and physicians.
