Earthquake Makers

"Maze, stop! What are you doing? Mazerine!" "Em, I know what it looks like, but I got it under control."   "Maze. Please. You've only been doing this for a couple of months, it takes years to master dissipating that much magic. You're going to cause a localized quake like that. Please, Maze, you'll level the building. Maze! MAZE!"   Maze jolted awake, covered in sweat and drool. Sorry, Em. I'm so so sorry. Maze checked the clock and got out of bed to shower. It was still dark, but she wasn't going back to sleep after that. It's been five days since that accident. Five nights of the same tragedy repeated over and over in her sleep. Five days of going over those moments leading up to the focused shockwave to understand how it all went so wrong. She had it. She had it. What happened?   Maze walked down the two flights of stairs and through the main hall. For the hundredth time, she stopped at the massive fireplace to read the inscription carved into the mantle. The energy of Earth is the energy we hold. "Well... tell me who let it all go," she said angrily to no one.   "Morning, Maze. Sleep well?" Cory asked, as Maze finally entered the industrial-sized kitchen. Cory was the very last person Maze wanted to see, but she already stepped through the door. Cory was at the coffee pot with his back to Maze, pouring two mugs. Maze looked out to the tables; no one. Seemed the rest of the Coven was still in bed. Was she that early? Maze turned to go back upstairs when Cory turned and said, "I asked you a question."   "You know damn well how I slept, Cory. Where is everyone? And when did you get here?" Maze took one of the mugs from Cory and sat at one of the stools at the island in the middle of the kitchen.   "Just got here. Everyone else just left to check the fault lines around Hollywood again. Your stunt has left a few faults still uneasy, and the one under the Hollywood Bowl is threatening to give." Cory was Em's brother, so when he moved to sit at a stool across from Maze, he brought the full weight of his resentment to the now very little island of two.   "Cory, I'll fix it. I'm going to get Em back."   "You're damned right you're going to fix it, Maze. No one's letting you off the hook. Lania and Jim both feel you need to stay out of sight for a while, but you are absolutely going to fix your mess and get Em back. I'm only here to see that you do."   "Look, I'm sorry. I don't know how many times I have to say it. It wasn't even my fault, Cory! Someone let loose a shit ton of energy that was about to set off the big one. I don't even know how to do that yet. But I do know it would have leveled all of Hollywood, all of downtown, South LA... This city is nowhere near prepared for that. None of you were here-"   "Where was Em?"   "I don't even know where Em was. We did our morning training with the small bits of dirt. Then it was lunch, and she went somewhere. I was here in the kitchen when I felt the surge. I ran to the geo room and saw this mega ball of energy, as if all of the bottles were opened at once. It was red. Very very red. So I tried to dissipate it myself. Em showed up as I was bottling it up and started yelling at me to stop, but I couldn't. It would have blasted this whole building -and us- to dust. Next thing I knew, I got a nosebleed and knocked myself unconscious. When I woke up, Em was dissolving away as if she'd absorbed the entirety of the quake."   "She bloody did, Maze. And I'm bloody angry. So you're going to reverse that energy magic and get her back."   "I know, I know. Damnit, I know. I just need help. I've been trying for five days to reverse it without bringing that quake back with her."   "Well that's why I'm here. I'll hold it. Come on. Let's get this done while everyone's out. I don't want to deal with anyone telling us what rules to follow. Come on."   Maze slid off the stool, taking her coffee with her. The last person she wanted help from was Cory, but this was her only chance to make things right. And he was her brother after all. She supposed that was a good thing.
