Sea Weed Farmer

Coral takes a deep breath from the diving bell and goes back to the sea floor. She picks up several sea urchins from their cages and throws them in a sack. It wasn't the best job, trap cleaning, but it was good enough. She preferred it to those who just cut the seaweed at least, nothing but cutting a giant plant.

Qualifications

Like traditional farming the specifics of Sea Weed farming are passed on from parent to child. To do the job at all requires the ability to hold one's breath for long amounts of time and to be a strong swimmer. Then there some who's role is to discern if there are any impurities in the seaweed before it can be eaten.

Purpose

Sea Weed farmers need to grow food for the population of their village or ship and some more prosperous farmers grow enough to ship it and sell to other parts of the world.

Social Status

Sea weed farming is not a prosperous or respected process. Those who do it normally do so because they need some way of paying their bills and taxes. It's always seen as a necessary job as seaweed and sea urchins are such an integral part of their food system but is not understood in all the hard work that goes into it from the view of the upper class.

Demographics

The tradition started as a naucti tradition and that is where a majority of sea weed farmers come from culturally. It's a very large part of the population, employing tens of thousands of people every year.
