Naming Conventions

THERE BE MAGIC INSIDE THAT OLD NAME

As with all things, the following should be taken as a suggestion or guideline at most, and is simply the convention I will be using. If you have other preferences please feel free to go with them. There are any number of reasons why a character might be named the way they are, and I certainly wont get hung up on them.  

Racial Naming Conventions

  The Badger Kin typically use Old English naming conventions. Traditional male names include Athelstan, Cyneric, Ealdwine, Leofric, and Uhtric, while traditional female names include Aethelflaed, Ecgwynn, Mildred, Saeflaed, and Wulfrun. Family names typically use a simple son of or daughter of convention, or alternatively they may use a simple of Placename to describe themselves. Epithets are common for people of renown, such as Person the Brave or Person the Strong.   The Bear Clan typically use Russian naming conventions. Traditional male names include Artem, Boris, Evgeni, Ruslan, or Vladimir, while traditional female names include Anastasia, Irina, Katerina, Masha, and Yelena. Family names typically use an of Placename convention or a professional surname, such as Kuznetsov, to denote which clan the person was born to.   The Daeva typically use Persian or Arabic naming conventions. Traditional male names include Ahmad, Darius, Kurush, Rahim, and Zahir, while traditional female names include Afsoud, Dana, Layla, Nazanin, and Samira. They do not typically use surnames.   The Deku typically take the name of herbs, flowers, plants, and trees. They do not traditionally have gendered or family names.   The Dwarves typically use Roman tria nomina naming conventions. These include a praenomen, of which traditional male names include Agrippa, Gaius, and Tiberius while female names include Decima, Lucia, and Octavia. Their family names are genderless, and include Julius, Cassius, and Viridius, while their final name, such as Brutus, Magnus or Oceanus must be earned.   The Efreeti typically use Ancient Egyptian names, Traditional male names include Ammon, Djedefre, Nehi, Seti, or Yakareb, while traditional female names include Amunet, Iset, Kiya, Maya, and Sitre. They do not typically use family names.   The Elves typically use Persian or Arabic naming conventions. Traditional male names include Ahmad, Darius, Kurush, Rahim, and Zahir, while traditional female names include Afsoud, Dana, Layla, Nazanin, and Samira. They typically use surnames, and their royalty use clan names while individuals of renown may often take epithets.   The Firbolgs typically live communally and do not use names among themselves. If they must take a name, they typically take the name of herbs, flowers, plants, and trees. They do not traditionally have gendered or family names.   The Gnolls typically use names of any number of Sub-Saharan African cultures. Traditional female names include Adaeze, Ayanda, Emem, Nyambura, and Zuri, while traditional male names include Andile, Dubaku, Kisembo, Mwenye, and Oyibo. They typically use clan names or a simple son or daughter of parent convention for their surnames.   The Goblins use guttural names with heavy consonant sounds that may seem unpleasant to other species. Traditional male names include Dren, Grog, Krusk, Thokk, and Varg, while traditional female names include Creega, Drenna, Murook, Oolah, and Vorka. They often, though not always, use clan names.   The Half-Elves typically use the naming convention of one or both of their parent's cultures, often mixing elements and creating a unique identity.   The Halflings typically use Hebrew naming conventions.   The Hobgoblins use guttural names with heavy consonant sounds that may seem unpleasant to other species. Traditional male names include Dren, Grog, Krusk, Thokk, and Varg, while traditional female names include Creega, Drenna, Murook, Oolah, and Vorka. Hobgoblinse make extensive use of clan and family names, often hyphenated and combined with epithets to make it absolutely clear how important they are.   The Humans typically use the naming conventions of the location where they are born. See Geographical Conventions below for more information.   The Kobolds are often given disparaging names by the races who enslave them. These names include Bloodwhelp, Coldclaw, Hooktail, Redtooth, or Slashback.   The Lizardmen typically use Indian and Pakistani naming conventions.   The Naiads typically use Greek naming conventions.   The Orcs typically use First Nation and Native American naming conventions.   The Pixies typically take the name of herbs, flowers, plants, and trees, from sources of magic, or Gaelic naming conventions. Names may include such words as Aoife, Aurora, Bardock, Dandelion, Diarmid, Fawn, Mairi, Rowan, or Seamus. They do not traditionally have gendered or family names.   The Ratfolk typically use classical English names. Traditional male names include Alfred, Baldwin, Edward, Henry, Martin, or Richard, while traditional female names include Abigail, Courtney, Elizabeth, Jane, Mary, and Victoria. The Ratfolk traditionally use family names that refer to places or their occupation.   The Shale typically use the same naming conventions as Goblins and are not permitted surnames by their Hobgoblin masters, though most Shale who leave the Bloodlaw will choose to take new names from a new culture they feel closest to.   The Simba typically use names of any number of Sub-Saharan African cultures. Traditional female names include Adaeze, Ayanda, Emem, Nyambura, and Zuri, while traditional male names include Andile, Dubaku, Kisembo, Mwenye, and Oyibo. They typically use clan names or a simple son or daughter of parent convention for their surnames. Some Simba use Ancient Egyptian names, as the people of Khayu do.   The Skinwalkers typically use the naming conventions of the location where they are born, though as most Skinwalkers are from Tcharnovog they generally follow Russian naming traditions. See Geographical Conventions below for more information.   The Witan typically use the naming conventions of the location where they are born, though as most Witan are from Edelweiss they generally follow German naming traditions. See Geographical Conventions below for more information.

Their family names are genderless, and include Julius, Cassius, and Viridius, while their final name, such as Brutus, Magnus or Oceanus must be earned.   The people of Edelweiss typically use German naming conventions. Traditional male names include Albrecht, Frederick, Johann, Leopold, and Wilhelm, while traditional female names include Amalie, Elise, Hannelore, Hilda, Isolde, Kirsten, and Valerie.   People of the Farplains typically use any number of First Nations or Native American naming conventions.   The people of Iwisa typically use names of any number of Sub-Saharan African cultures. Traditional female names include Adaeze, Ayanda, Emem, Nyambura, and Zuri, while traditional male names include Andile, Dubaku, Kisembo, Mwenye, and Oyibo. They typically use clan names or a simple son or daughter of parent convention for their surnames.   The people of Khayu typically use Ancient Egyptian names, or Hebrew names if they are halflings.   The people of Kynos typically use Greek naming conventions.   The people of Sanctuary typically use Gaelic naming conventions or they take their names from nature. They do not typically use family names.   The people of Tcharnovog typically use Russian naming conventions. Traditional male names include Artem, Boris, Evgeni, Ruslan, or Vladimir, while traditional female names include Anastasia, Irina, Katerina, Masha, and Yelena. Family names typically use the name of one of the person's parents with an -ov suffix if the person is male, or an -ova suffix if the person is female.   The people of the Volsunleid typically use Norse naming conventions. Traditional male names include Asbjorn, Halfdan, Ivar, Olaf, and Ragnar while traditional female names include Aslaug, Dagny, Idunn, Rannveig, and Solveig. They typically use a -son or -dottir suffix on either their father or mother's name as a surname.   The people of The Weald typically use Old English naming conventions. Traditional male names include Athelstan, Cyneric, Ealdwine, Leofric, and Uhtric, while traditional female names include Aethelflaed, Ecgwynn, Mildred, Saeflaed, and Wulfrun. Family names typically use a simple son of or daughter of convention, or alternatively they may use a simple of Placename to describe themselves.
