Fylkir Worship

Fylkir worship is the organized religion of the Völsunleid, which centers around the offering of sacrifices to the Fylkir, the chief living descendant of Æinarr the Wolf King. The Fylkir, as elected by the chiefs of the land at the Great Blót, which is held when the previous Fylkir has died, must be of the bloodline of Sigurðr Völsung and is traditionally also elected as the King of the Völsunleid. However, especially in the case of equally worthy brothers who choose to rule together, this has not always been the case.   A similar but less organized worship of Æinarr the Wolf King exists throughout the more rural parts of the Völsunleid, where the peasants of the land traditionally offer worship and sacrifice to the Gods more directly and without the use of a church hall.   Fylkir worship is a largely oral religion, with its beliefs and myths spread through epic poems shared by seers traveling from village to village. The only written account of these beliefs are on large runestones erected by the Fylkirs themselves at the holy sites throughout the Völsunleid.

The Gods

ÆINARR THE WOLF KING

Æinarr is an ancient warrior-king who reigns over heaven and earth from his great hall on the silvery winter moon beyond the rings of Kaena. He is always accompanied wherever he goes by his three enormous grey wolves, Dagmær, Frode, and Rúnar. He wields the magical battleaxe, Víðarr, to which all warriors must bow and swear an oath of fealty.   The greatest warriors of the Völsunleid, but only those who die in glory, may join him in his hall as his Einherjar. These greatest warriors to have ever lived feast with him for eternity and enjoy the delights of life, and at times are sent back to Kaena to encourage the faithful, show them the will of Æinarr, and inspire them to victory when a battle seems lost and all hope of glory is gone.   So long as his hall is full good, strong, and faithful Einherjar, the end of the world will never come.   Dagmær, Frode, and Rúnar
The three giant wolves of Æinarr. Dagmær, the she-wolf and mother of the pack, is a radiant and beautiful creature full of grace and nobility. Frode is her eldest son, and with all the wisdom of the world inside him. Rúnar is a wild, young wolf, full of strength and a desire for glory. Together they judge the fallen warriors of the Völsunleid who are brought to them by the Valkyries, and decide whether or not a soul is worthy of joining Æinarr's Einherjar.

RANEIGH

Raneigh is Æinarr's shieldmaiden wife and the most important of the Valkyries. More than any other God she enjoys traveling the word of Kaena and being among its people, for whom she holds great affection. She is beloved to warriors and mothers both, and it is believed she will answer a person's prayers when the other Gods will not. Her eyes, full of stars, can see into the souls of the living and determine the quality of a creature's soul.

FASOLT AND FRÆNIR

Fasolt and Frænir are the twin sons of Æinarr and Raneigh. They are a thundrous, adventurous pair who love nothing more than drinking, feasting, and making merry with the sons and daughters of man. They are always getting into mischief and causing problems for their father and mother. Still, they are brave warriors and will lead the Einherjar into battle at their father's command.

Gandálfr

Gandálfr is said to be a great dragon that slumbers beneath Æinarr's hall on the moon. It is believed that when the hearts of men fail and there are no warriors left to pay homage to the Fylkir, the rings of Kaena will shatter and Gandálfr will be free to feast on the Gods and bring ruin to Kaena. The world will be consumed in his rainbow flames and all will perish unless glory can be sparked in the souls of man once again.
