European War
Revolution
The situation in Europe was progressively worsening ever since the Phlegreian Fields eruption. The first major european war ever since the Second World War surprised many inhabitants of the other continents, but absolutely no one in Europe.
European Union failed to pacify the issues caused by the Phlegreian Fields eruption - unsurprisingly. The de facto disappearance of Italy, Spain being dismantled and Greece turning almost communist only worsened the situation. Any attempts to increase centralization by the Union (especially the France and Germany) was seen as attempt to introduce open socialism by an increasingly anti-EU eastern members. What's worst, the economic problems fueled internal dissent, leading to an increasing number of riots.
The situation reached the breaking point during the second half of the 2034, mostly due to the talks about food shortages expected during the winter - the harvest was still rather terrible due to bad weather. The riots exploded into a regular street battles in many larger cities. Finally, military began stepping in to restore order. Unfortunately, at least in some countries, the definition of 'restoring order' was a brutal crackdown targeted at left-wing groups and muslim districts.
The end result of the First European War (war that was closer to a great number of civil wars and regional interventions) is the utter collapse of the European Union. It is replaced by a number of independent states, most of which are controlled by political radicals. France and Germany turned fascists (though the former country maintained a lot of Revolutionary France symbolism). Scandinavia turned radical socialist. Central Europe typically moved increasingly nationalist, but in many different forms.
France and Germany began outright purges of the muslims and leftwingers, while Scandinavia did the same but for the right-wing movements that failed to seize power. Needless to say, France and Germany became world pariahs, but Scandinavia was only 'disliked'.
