Second Spanish Civil War
Revolution
Following the long volcanic winter and general economic collapse, Catalonia decides to secede from the Kingdom of Spain. As a result, Spain essentially disappears from the map for almost a decade.
Catalonia was dissatisfied with its position in the Kingdom of Spain for decades. It was a stable governmental policy to drain the richer regions and use the money to try to keep those less fortunate areas afloat. This caused a lot of dissent in Catalonia, Basque Country, and even Galicia to a point. Why the situation was manageable under normal circumstances, the Phlegreian Fields eruption changed everything.
Far-left government of the Kingdom issued several increasingly harsh laws regarding the help for the more afflicted regions. While first few were seen as completely sensible, it was too much. This together with the suspicions of many groups that the government is pushing socialist agenda under the guise of disaster relief (massively increasing taxes and social benefits) became the final straw. General strike changed into an open secession of several regions at once after the government had the army open fire on the protesters - and into a regular civil war when some of the military units refused.
The war became an ever greater drain on the resources and economy of the Iberian Peninsula. As the result, both the country and the secessionists essentially collapsed - in case of some regions to an almost pre-industrial levels. Basque Country and Catalonia became an independent countries. The socialist government retained and even strenghtened the hold on the rest of the country. Socialist Republic of Spain was proclaimed soon after the war.
