The Oxurian / Luxavian Debate

These are two largely academic terms that only the most pretentious scholars would use regularly or in normal conversation. Supposedly:
  • Oxurians are creatures that are the fractal reflections of an Īśvara's True Soul. They are less free than mortals, but they are often more powerful. Also called 'immortals' or 'spirits', these beings function like the sensory organs of an Ishvara; they may act relatively independently, interpreting the divine will; but they learn simultaneously. A hive mind, part of a natural hierarchy. When one dies, it's essence must be re-kindled by it's master, and that is a taxing process. They will be changed by it too, yet their memories will usually survive the transition. These aspects are guardians and soldiers, and their duties prescribe adaptability.
  • Luxavians are creatures created in the image of an Īśvara, but their existence is founded on and supported by the laws of the universe instated by the Divine Song. They often possess independent autonomy, and are typically also called 'mortals'. They can easily die from old age, disease, or from wounds (though not all do and the death of a mortal will force them back into the cycle of reincarnation. That is, when a body is re-drawn from the matter of the world, they become something new in detail but often the same in aggregate.
  • Examples of Oxurians include: Deva (i.e. gods, deities, numen, seraphs, daivika, or whatever you want to call them), Naga (i.e. dragons, yakshas, laukika, elementals, vritra, etc.) and Asura (i.e. demons, jinn, devils, espers, imps, raskasas, etc.)   Examples of Luxavians include: Men, Scions, Incarnates, Beasts, Animals, and Plants.   Ghosts may also be considered Luxavian, despite being spirits, though it's a bit of a grey area; because ghosts also occasionally turn into demons, but not always.   The creatures that crawl out of the waste lands beyond reality are a complete mystery, and there's lots of debate about which category they fit into. Some people say one, some say the other, some say they should make a third category; most people don't care.   It gets more confusing because some scholars posit that the things from the crawling chaos are just another kind of demon, and so call them Jinn. Others say they are Fêa. And what about stranger phenomena still, like living dreams, homunculi, miasmas, capitulators, and other organisms that appear to be "on the verge of life"?   What does it even mean to be alive? they ask.   The debate rages on.
