If you need to get anywhere fast, a portal is the spell of choice. Keep in mind, it's expensive in terms of ki. The farther away your target location is, the more ki required. Also, the size of the portal diameter and the amount of time opened will determine the amount of ki used.

The level of magic required is beyond the capacity for anyone not born with an open ki reserve. If you're a human ki user, you'll need to use ofuda to help balance the amount of energy taken from your body. Even with the talisman, you'll be exhausted unless you've taken time to build up your reserve's capacity.
These magic gates are mainly used on a small scale, short term, and for personal use. Permanent portals, as of this writing, are impossible. Though Date Hoji theorizes if a source of energy that didn't rely on a living being could power it, a long-term gate could be created.

WARNING! Only enter stable portals or risk being lost in the void between locations. Rescue is impossible!

Trade and Transport

Making portals to move goods quickly has been used for nigh a millennium by yokai merchants. It's especially popular for time dependent orders or items that may spoil. The fishing industry is the biggest commercial portal creator.
Enterprising ki users began contracting portal creation. This lead to the Portal Creation Guild being formed in 1656. It's the oldest mage guild in Japan.

One would think that portals would be great for mass transit. Unfortunately, they aren't worth it in the cost of ki for portal size and duration. After the Portal Train incident of 1867, yokai and mage courts outlawed portals for mass transit.
If you're wondering what happened, here's the gist. A train enthusiast mage, Tara Nakata, tried to drive his private train through a large portal, thinking he and his friend could maintain the enormous gate long enough for all 32 cars drive through.

But it collapsed when Tara's friend had to steal ki to maintain the gate. He died from the repercussions. The entire train, Tara, and every passenger on board were lost to the void, and all that was left of the area around the failed portal was a crater.
