Elwen Tiller
Commander of the Western Garrison
He’s not as tactful and clever as me in courtly matters, but I can’t deny that he’s got a gift when it comes to shouting at the recruits.
Early Life
Born in Rinstá to Eltmar Tiller and his Oulter mother Alejt ai Rittsvel in 1549 AA, Elwen grew up as a rowdy boy who loved tales of knights and heroism. During the time of his birth, Apelfar, his great-uncle, was still the Margrave of the Kláv although it had become clear by then that his holdings would pass on to Elwen's grandfather, Melwih, as the old lord lacked a male heir. With his side of the family in line to inherit the lands, his parents and grandparents took keen interest in the young boy's development.Education
A couple of weeks after Elwen’s sixth birthday, his father Eltmar began mentoring him by teaching the young child about topics such as courtly etiquette, social manipulation, and the history and politics of the land. Nearly all of those topics seemed awfully dull to him, all save for the history lessons. While most of those lessons were boring as well, especially when they covered trivial matters between the nobles, but every once in a while he also had the opportunity to learn of great battles and mighty deeds. Those were the stories that stuck with him whilst most of the other information was left forgotten.Your sons have been quite fine, I can reassure you. Not a day goes by without me hearing the shouting, grunting, and all manner of other noises coming from the training yard. Doesn’t matter if it’s the crack of dawn or long past sundown, those two seem to be there at all times. Your older lad is constantly sparing with my retainers while Holg appears to prefer learning from a distance, although I’m certain he’ll gather the courage to step in the sand soon enough as well. Teaching them anything else, on the other hand, has been a pain. Their minds seem shut to matters of statecraft and intrigue.
In 1559, a year after his grandfather’s ascent to power as Margrave of the Kláv, Eltmar left his son in his father’s care so that Elwen could observe the new margrave and learn from his actions. The young Elwen was merely ten years old at the time, but he and the elderly margrave got along well.
Melwih was far more honourable and just compared to Elwen’s father and he encouraged his grandson to explore his own interests, telling him to define his own fate. With those words of encouragement, the young child intensified his martial training and asked for more books on the subject so that he could learn on his own.
Following Melwih’s death a year later, their grandmother, Îta Ulich, took Elwen and his younger brother Holg to the court of Duke Leinrik of Karllan. There, the children continued their education whilst the duke’s own daughter was sent to Rinstá. Duke Leinrik allowed Elwen to continue pursuing his martial ambitions, although his relationship with the duke was strenuous at times. He stayed in court in Valskaen until his 16th birthday, upon which he finally returned home.

I love the excerpt of the letter. That's a really nice touch.
Thanks! I mostly just stuck a quote in there to make the formatting look nice, but I'm glad you like the writing :D
