Lord of Gehel Keep Âldbreh Gehel
Âldbreh's life had been chosen for him long before he had ever been born.— History of the Minor Houses, Vol. III
Âldbreh of the
House of Gehel was the
Lord of
Gehel Keep, a small castle on the northern shore of the
Pallern, from 1136 until his untimely death in 1140
AA. He inherited his family’s ancestral seat from his father,
Elîvihel II, a strict and controlling man who sought to shape his heir into a brilliant strategist, bringing Âldbreh on military campaigns in service of the
Kingdom of the Hartilians from a young age. The path that his father had set for him had eventually led to his tragic downfall as the young man died from injuries sustained in battle at the age of 37, never having married and produced an heir of his own. Âldbreh was succeeded by his uncle's grandson,
Hânsil.
Determined Destiny
Growing up as the son of a man obsessed with victory and military might, Âldbreh Gehel’s fate had been preordained long before he had even learned to walk. Swords, spears and other weapons were pushed into his hands as soon as he could bear to wield them, beginning his long and difficult education in martial matters.
The young boy never once had much of an opportunity to learn to know his own wants and desires as any sense of self-exploration was heavily discouraged and replaced with strict discipline which had the inverse effect of leading to his feelings of apathy towards most things in life. Even vital tasks like finding a wife and securing an heir fell to the wayside as he simply felt ordained to command and fight, obeying his father's will until his final breath.
Triumph of Apathy
Following the death of Elîvihel II, Âldbreh continued down the path that had been laid out before him, fearing the change and uncertainty that would come were he to choose a new fate of his own, breaking everyone’s perception of the young lord. His subjects and his liege, King
Vôhil I of the
House of Pentiwichen, knew him as a martial man honed for war and so he was chained to his sword, an apathetic machine of a man.
As the Kingdom of the Hartilians expanded its influence through a series of military campaigns, Âldbreh dutifully fulfilled his tasks, leading his forces from battle to battle. Despite all his skills, however, his lack of passion and a loss of hope weakened him from within, leaving him vulnerable to the blows that had eventually struck him down, giving the man a final rest from the life chosen for him.
