Dragon

Dragons are extremely dangerous and powerful reptilian animals which are capable of using elemental breaths. They live primarily in mountains and usually eat meat if it's available, however they can eat virtually anything.

Basic Information

Growth Rate & Stages

Dragonlings

Dragons begin their lives within eggs. A newly hatched dragon is called a dragonling. They are wingless creatures born in large numbers, as only a few ever survive to maturity. Dragonlings are roughly the size of a deer. They have voracious appetites, but lack the features that distinguish their elders of their gender. Dragonlings usually remain with their mothers until they reach adulthood and venture out on their own.

Drakes

Male dragons never develop into the winged monsters of myth since their forelegs don't develop into wings like the female's. Drakes seek out the lairs of high dragons immediately after reaching maturity. Often several drakes will linger around the home of a high dragon, each hoping to receive approval. Once a drake is selected by a high dragon, he will be monogamous for life. Drakes defend their potential nest aggressively, and many would-be dragon hunters have lost their lives to a drake's fiery breath or a crushing blow from its tail.

Dragons

Female dragons take much longer to mature than their male counterparts. Young females travel great distances looking for a suitable nesting site. Because of their nomadic habits, these are the dragons most frequently encountered by man. These dragons already have wings and usually become high dragons if they are allowed to live long enough.

High Dragons

High dragons are the oldest and most powerful dragon females. The high dragon will excavate a massive lair for herself in order to accommodate her eggs and dragonlings. High dragons rarely leave their lairs; they prefer to spend their time sleeping, mating, and living off the prey their drakes bring back. However, roughly once every century, the high dragon will prepare for clutching by taking wing. Commonly known as a rampage, she will fly far and wide for weeks, eating hundreds of animals, to support her growing dragonlings. Leaving devastation in her wake, she then returns to her lair to lay her eggs, restarting the cycle of dragons.

Divine dragons

Some argue that there is an additional step after high dragons, the Divine dragons are considered by many to be nothing more than legends. Despite this there are records of white dragons twice the size of a high dragon with the abillity to spew out white fire capable of melting away rock, metal and even items protected by magic. Ancient elven legends tell that all dragons were born at the same time as the gods, after the union of the sun and the earth. Furthermore they also tell that a dragon flew out on it's own and didn't return for a whole year. When it returned it's power was so spectacular and terrifying that the gods cursed dragons and banished them from the skies out of fear, thus cutting them of from the everlight and their main source of magic sustenance. They went mad and most dragons became nothing more than dangerous beasts driven by instict with no real intelligence, this lead to humans driving them to near extinction in order to protect themselves.
