Cake by the Ocean

Cake by the Ocean (Dee Yen See'ee) is an annual spectacle held in Ancho where teams of enmanates compete to make and decorate giant cakes on the beaches of the Gulf of Campronto. The competition takes place over several days before the cakes are judged and then eaten by attendees of the event.   Each year there is a theme for the competition. Teams of up to ten are able sign up to compete and are responsible for bringing their own ingredients and equipment with the exception of a table which is provided. There are few rules for how the cakes must be baked, assembled, and decorated, allowing for a range of creative decisions depending on the composition of the team.   Once three days have passed, the cakes are judged by an esteemed panel of judges. This generally includes the mayor of Ancho, the leader of the merchant guild, and a handful of culinary and artistic experts from around Reisouth. Cakes are judged on size, appearance, taste, and adherence to the theme. In addition to choosing an overall winner, there are special awards for various other criteria depending on the year, including a crowd favorite voted by attendees. A strange, yet highly coveted award is the "Most Face-Smashable Cake" given to the team with the cake the judges would most like to shove their faces into.   Following judging, the cakes are eaten by those in attendance, but not in any formal fashion. No knives, forks, napkins, or plates are provided, meaning people must bring their own or simply eat with their hands. Most choose the latter, making a mess of themselves and the beach in the process. This portion of the event often devolves into a food, or rather cake, fight.
