Leviathans

Leviathans are ocean dwelling creatures that can be found across Leitoria. The term leviathan actually refers to multiple distinct species that are commonly grouped together.

Leviathan Families

There are several distinct types of leviathans, each of which can further be divided into similar species. For example, both the Eastern Plesios and the Blue Speckled Plesios are members of the larger Plesios family. Different species within a family often only differ in color, size, and habitat, and few outside of academia bother to name specific species.

Plesios

Length: 34 feet / 10.3 meters

The plesios was the first type of leviathan discovered, and it is still the most widely recognized.

They are difficult to hunt, but their meat is considered a rare and expensive delicacy. Some believe that plesioses are distantly related to the long extinct ancient dragons.

Ichthyos

Length: 20 feet / 6 meters

Ichthyoses are relatively small leviathans. They are very common in the South Draconian Ocean, but they are rarely seen because they swim at deeper levels of the ocean. These leviathan typically feed on small squid.

Ichthyos bones are often used in jewelry and charms. Touching the bones is said to bring good fortune, especially for those traveling at sea.

Mesos

Length: 46 feet / 14 meters

Mesoses are large and relatively rare leviathans occasionally spotted by sailors far out at sea.

These leviathans are carnivorous apex predators that feed on giant squid, sharks, and smaller leviathans. They do not interfere with large sailing vessels, but they have been known to attack smaller rowboats or unfortunate sailors who fall overboard.
