Chimera

Chimera is a powerful and expensive addictive recreational substance that only occurs naturally as an underground mineral. It is magical in nature, and cannot be synthesized artificially as a result. It appears as a clear, colourless crystal that refracts light in bright environments (can appear to shimmer like a rainbow when held to a strong enough light source). Typically, it is administered by shattering the crystal into smaller shards and embedding them into the user’s skin. The semi-magical properties of the crystal allow it to quickly dissolve into the bloodstream and muscle of the user and deliver a long-lasting, potent high.   Chimera crystals are a key component in many magical devices and other high-tech machines, and their rarity makes them cost a pretty penny. Of course, while most kingdoms prefer to have these crystals put to good use, many more narrower-minded individuals would rather enjoy themselves. Illicit Chimera mining operations can be found anywhere on Legere, as the crystals themselves don’t follow a pattern of formation. The naga use Chimera as key leverage when making deals with surface dwellers- Naga nobles collect them and engage in trade with capital cities while naga rogues may sell Chimera to addicts. Chimera is a decent magical battery. The crystals often only form as small slivers, smaller than other magical battery substances like vis, however its capacity for storage is still very high for its size.   Chimera highs usually involve the user entering a blissful, catatonic state. This can last anywhere from a few minutes to hours, depending on the dosage. Chimera can also induce a raging madness in individuals who overdose, with the magical power within the drug overloading the user’s mind and raising their blood pressure to levels that can be fatal. This hypertension has led to many a gruesome death.   Chimera addicts can easily be recognized by large gaping holes in their skin where they stick crystal shards. Their veins may be swollen, and their bodily fluids shimmer in the same manner the crystals do. Chimera addicts may also experience hair loss and osteoporosis.
