The Well of Souls

The Well of Souls, also called A'Lenora (literally: "The Womb" in Faewinite), is the largest freshwater lake on the continent, found amidst the disputed territory to the south of the Covenanti city-state. The Well of Souls is central to the Faewinite creation myth: which tells of how the goddess Latuna planned to create life on her newly-created world using water to form the bodies and souls of all living things. From puddles emerged the insects of the world, from streams emerged cold-blooded animals, and out of the world's rivers crawled the first warm-blooded animals. Latuna saved her grandest creation for last, for from the world's pure, boundless oceans, she would create perfect beings to serve as her emissaries.
However, the wily trickster god Fraus learned of Latuna's plans, and in a fit of jealousy, he grabbed fistfuls of salt from the surface of the moon and threw them into the world's oceans until the waters were saturated. Only one large enough body of water remained unsullied: A'Lenora, The Well of Souls. However, Latuna did not learn of Fraus' treachery until it was too late, for as the Faewinite people emerged onto the shores of the Well of Souls, they soon encountered other beings who came from the salted seas: similar in appearance to the Faewinite but clearly tainted by the influence of Fraus. They were impulsive, short-lived, selfish, and their connection to the trickster God was plain to see: if one of these beings was put under stress, the very seawater that birthed them would seep out of their skin. Faewinites believe that their longer lifespans, as well as the fact that they don't perspirate, are a result of their being created within the pure, fresh waters of the well of souls. This myth is the root of the aversion to salt that penetrates other aspects of Faewinite culture.
Faewinites will often take a pilgrimage to A'Lenora once in their lifetime, which is often the only journey outside of Faewin that a resident might undertake, as the journey requires passing through human-controlled territory.
