Gexel Saucer Vehicle in Lanternal | World Anvil

Gexel Saucer

Suddenly, a bright light tore silently through the air. Karl braced himself. Whatever it is, it will be on them soon, and he doesn't have time to act. The disk of light whisked over the group in an flash. Stunned at the abruptness of the encounter he tried to process what he just saw. Two men had stood on the disk; one giant and muscular and the other small and obscured by a hooded robe.

"That's him," Licentious said to the group undisturbed by the overflight.

"Who?" Chrysanthemum asked.

"Akante."
— Chapter 36: And Then They Were Six
Gexel saucers, or light disks, are a form of transportation used by mages in the plane of Lon'Dun. Cast from a spell, the saucer will form from a point and expand to the user's required size. Limitations exist, however, on the size and duration of Gexel saucers based on the magical limitations of the caster. Named after the spell's creator, Gexel the Fat, Gexel saucers are among the fasted methods of transportation across any plane.

How It's Used

Once a Gexel saucer is summoned the caster must step up onto the disk to maintain it's form. If a saucer is generated and no occupant mounts it within the minute, the saucer will destabilize. Once upon the disk the rider will be able to control the movement of the disk by their will. While Gexel saucers are slip-resistant, the disk cannot protect the rider from wind resistance. It is recommended that when traveling at higher speeds to kneel onto the disk, clutching the lip of the saucer for security.   The color of light a Gexel saucer produces cannot be controlled and is based on the caster's born magical affinity (a caster's Gexel saucer will always manifest as the same color). Potential colors typically range from pure white to deep amber, although some aberrant examples have occurred where the coloration dipped into reds and greens.

Interesting use of a spell for transportation, I especially like the detail about its limitations; that you have to hold on at higher speeds.
