Renyan Army

Leadership The representative of the Ammaken traditionally has control of the military while taking commands from the Kalren. They command the wider strategies with two area commanders called wardens and then onto officers who are often nobles. Individual glory is something officers want and will often clash with each other or take risks to secure it. Communication is performed either through young boys supporting as runners.

Warden of the North

The position created shortly before the war with Bast. It has command of defending the northern section of Al Renya. Historically this would be directed from Seiran Dyrae but was moved to Ald Deyna.

Warden of the South

The Warden of the South position was formed with the founding of First Loss. The position relies a lot on scouting and knowing the disposition of the different factions, as well as keeping up constant patrols for raiding forces.

Forces

Spear and Arrow Levy

Citizens can volunteer as spear men or archers as a police force for the cities or as hunters but will join the army in times of war, as well as addtional forces that are conscripted. They have minimal training and wooden weapons which they create themselves. Armour comes in the form of leathers or padded tunics with wooden helmets and wooden shields for the spear men and a lighter version of this gear for the archers.

Bal Kaeren

The Bal Kaeren, also known as the Wood Knights, are the Elite of the Renyan Unitary. They are dressed in wooden plated armour and train intensely to be more skillful than their foes.

Forest Bears

The Renyans recently have started taming bears. Usually they use these bears for pulling wagons but they have been used on flanks, especially to scare horses and break cavalry charges.

Renyan War Dogs

After the world ended, dogs slowly regained their lost instincts and began roaming as large packs. Al Renya managed to domesticate some of these packs and now use them in battle. They are large and wolflike. The Wood Knights rarely use these instead they are used to reinforce the local spear forces, to hunt criminals or as cheap security.

Strategy

The equipment of the troops is forced by the materials available. The army relies on the ease of training spearmen and the quality of the gear primarily. Each Bal Kaeren needs to train hard to overcome metal weapons they might be facing. Common tactics have been to charge the spear wall at the enemy regulars to break their formation. Then the elite Wood Knights advance and hunt the enemy elite. The spears then form up to keep the regulars away from the elite. They rely on their greater numbers to guard their flanks.
The Renyan forces aren't above using tactics to win at the cost of 'honour'. They see that they are outmatched by the Armies of Bast and that the Lost Coup will trick them if possible so they are quick to adapt. The lives of individuals are often sacrificed by the commanders to defeat a stronger foe.

Support

The Bal Kaeren have their own quartermasters in each squad who take care of maintenance. For the spear men and archers, most of them are skilled carpenters or huntsmen anyway so maintaining their own gear is natural.
The medical support for the army is lackluster in most aspects and usually only a small force of medical staff travel with the army.
Transport is arrange in large wooden wagons, usually pulled by bears.

Societal Impact

Spear and Arrow levies are conscripted at times of need, with a smaller volunteer force kept at all times to deal with banditry and crime. With the threat of semi-hostile nations to the north and the south, military is a constant concern for the common citizen.
