Crest

Crests are required to live very... fruitful lives. The Peerage has no greater interest than in keeping the blood flowing like the sweet, sweet wine it so dearly loves.
The Crest is the head of an Avolerian noble family and its House; The lord or lordress of the manor. It is a mostly lifelong title, cherished by the Peerage and Public alike.

Inheritance

The title of Crest is hereditary, and solely hereditary, unless there are simply no offspring to pass it down to. When the current Crest dies or becomes too infirm to rule, the title is passed to his or her child; or, if childless, is passed to his or her sibling. A childless Crest is very rare, however.   Those not true to the Crest’s bloodline will not gain the title. This includes adopted children, half-siblings of an inheritor, and the spouse of the current Crest. In cases where the title of Crest cannot be legitimately inherited, the Peerage deems the House unfit to invest in, and is ruled defunct.   The title of Crest is not limited to sex, and typically not age. It is up to the House to choose its Crest from the pool of the residing Crest’s children, though by custom the title often goes to the eldest child. The Peerage is most fearful of female Crests, as miscarriages and infertility pose major threats to a House’s legacy. However, it has made itself to have only little power over the matter. Houses may favor matrilineal or patrilineal inheritance.

Cresting

The inauguration of a Crest is called a Cresting, and is held by the Peerage itself as a ceremony.
