Diasporans
To be a Diasporan is to be a member of the largest class of humanity: world-bound people outside of the Galactic Core, who identify with single homeworlds they may never leave. Diasporans make up the vast bulk of the human population, settled and left to develop on their own during the First and Second Expansion Periods. The Diaspora includes everyone from the people of worlds proximal to the Core through to worlds that have lived without – or have never known – Union’s presence for thousands of years, and all other societies in between. Diasporan worlds can be covered in glittering or stinking metroswathes, mixed urban spaces, quiet ecological preserves, arcadian paradises, or lonely terrestrial barrens – any places humans or groups of humans can live. For better or for worse, the Diaspora is what people see when they think of “humanity”.
Diasporan humans straddle the line between the wandering Cosmopolitans and rooted peoples of the Galactic Core. For the worlds outside of Union's Capital network, the utopian promise of the galactic hegemon is still a prize to be won, an end-state to be affected through political, cultural, and literal struggle. The vast diaspora of humans make their home on the frontier, free of the Galactic Core. These worlds tend to vary wildly in their nature, with a polyglot mix of many different cultures, states, religions, economies, and levels of technological advancement. Diasporan worlds, while technically member states of Union, often have little-to-no direct interaction with the hegemon; those that remember make myth of the distant power, some aching for its return and others cursing the name. Even on worlds directly ruled by Union, it is by and large a background entity at best for the vast majority of people in the galaxy. While some heads of state, church, tribe, commune, etc, might meet with Union representatives (usually a Union administrator and their retinue of subalterns), the average Diasporan human will never see a Union flag in person.
