Structure
Unknown to the outside world, the black pillar has a strict hierarchy when it comes to rank, mirroring military practices. Those who join (normally young men from lower class families) must start as a cadet and work their way up as follows:
- preparation
- maintenance
- Low specialist- Either Bolters or peacekeepers depending on their speciality, sent to security jobs under the command of a captain.
- High specialist- Peacekeepers or scripters, active combatants deployed with more expensive pillar technology.
- Captains- mid rank commanders, either sent to supervise security work, internal research or low risk external operations.
- Colonel- Highest rank to see combat. Normally in command of elite small groups used for black ops with high risk factors.
- General- The only members of staff permitted to meet with CEO, Francis DeWitt and in charge of acting out his wishes within the facility.
- CEO- Francis DeWitt runs entirety of the black pillar. Rarely public, but recognised as a powerful military man and intelligent entrepreneur.
Public Agenda
Protection of the people and their assets against an ever changing world of threats.
Assets
Massive funds, a private army capable of materialising at any moment, fortress style headquarters and access to powerful magic both offensive and defensive.
Standard black pillar mercenaries include:
Standard black pillar mercenaries include:
- Peacekeepers - Simple fighter class, heavy plate and armed with a mace and small shield for domestic issues, long sword as secondary for worse issues. wartime ranks will be armed with spears and larger shields
- Oathkeepers - Melee combatants fortified with magical abilities, heavy armour, closed face helm and large shield, armed with sabre, small crossbow and dagger, surcoat with black pillar logo on to indicate rank. Typically healers and sergeants, keep peacekeepers in line and will heal injuries (reducing the chance of premiums going up due to injured units returning to black pillar).
- Scriptors - slightly armoured battle mages, generally specialise in restraint and non-violent removal however still capable of damaging spells and combat if necessary. generally prefer their summon pillars to be with a vantage point, away from melee range.
- Bolters - leather armoured crossbowmen, generally employed by banks and other places of high security where lethal force may be necessary in case of a robbery. high spots also generally required although generally the summoning of a rank of bolter pillars is enough of a deterrent to stop most would-be criminals from even attempting a crime.
- Tabula-Rasa - Extremely dangerous, very powerful and almost never used. most commonly seen if a member of the black pillar is killed on duty as a punishment to those who killed him. does not distinguish between friend or foe and will kill indiscriminately. a timer grafted the the back of the creature will summon it back to its cage after 10 rounds (60 seconds) to stop it from causing too much destruction. although it is more than capable of doing so.
History
Existing for over a century, a powerhouse of private military within Elan has made being a mercenary outside of the organisation very difficult. While many rely on the black pillar for security, most are well aware of the organisations shady dealings and dark past, even if they do not know any details specifically.
