Origins.
Originally, Kryllos was two idyllic continental landmasses separated by a bountiful ocean.
The first sentient beings emerge on Kryllos.
On one continent dwelled the Giants.
The Primordials depleted the resources of their homeland. They coveted the excesses available amongst the peaceful realm of the Giants and Monarchs.
The Primordials used ancient magic to shift their mainland, pivoting it across the ocean, set on a collision course with the territories of the Giants and Monarchs.
When the landmasses collided, the War of Catastrophe began.
In a covert action, Giants freed the mortals enslaved by the Primordials. Mankind discovered how to forge iron/steel instead of working solely in bronze, and the nearly immortal Primordials proved vulnerable to weapons of iron.
In a selfless act, the Monarchs gave up their lives to mend the war-ravaged and depleted landscape - their sacrifice began the Age of Renewal.
The Water Monarch would revitalize the ocean with new life and create new lakes and rivers.
The Earth Monarch would enrich the soil, split the landmasses, and give rise to new mountains.
The Air Monarch purified the air, and gave birth to new avian species.
The fire Monarch gave the lands renewed warmth (the battles were so intense the world almost slipped into Ice Age).
Steel, Adamantine and Gemstone would scatter their souls among the mountains and enrich them with new minerals for the mortal races.
Finally the Light Monarch would scatter her soul along the sky and create the stars in the night sky (some historians would argue that this was the catalyst that gave birth to the gods.)
Divine magic (healing; miracles) was prominent and most tribes were polytheistic and theocratic, commonly ruled by warlords. Deities communed with their worshippers, at times walking the world amongst men.
In the year 2100 B.C., the Waramunt Imperium declared fealty to Veremund, God of Law and Order. With this declaration, the Waramunt Imperium became the first theocratic monarchy.
A centuries long religious war intent on exterminating Fae - purging the world of supernatural beings deemed impure or unholy.
Even as the final siege of the Purification Crusade was laid upon the last surviving Fae stronghold of Eldermist, the elders of the last Fae poured all of their wisdom, lore, and history into one of their own, a Fae named Moonshadow. Moonshadow escaped the destruction of Eldermist and wandered abroad, last of her kind, a living Spell Tome carrying within her all Fae knowledge...if only she remembered how to unlock the understanding contained somewhere in her memory.
A fiery meteor smeared across the sky, cratering the planet, delivering Witchrock and High Magic. The impact blasted continent-sized landmasses into the air, suspending them in place (where they remain to this day.) The fallout and resultant ash transformed the surface beneath the aerial continents into a wasteland of magical mutation where the dead rose from their graves.
Starfall generated a massive surge of Arcane energy which enveloped the world (like the rings of Saturn), disconnecting the people from their gods. Divine magic dwindled toward extinction... but also forged a newfound independence from the gods (though initially many worshippers felt forsaken, punished, or abandoned by their pantheon.)
Immediately after Starfall, civilization was disrupted and thrust into a Dark Age - a period of intellectual and cultural decline, some tribal 'survival of the fittest' mentality amongst the survivors. With the loss of the ability to commune with gods, mistrust and superstition were rampant. Some began experimenting with Witchrock. Two surviving minor principalities, formerly small duchies/fiefdoms or petty kingdoms before Starfall, that were fortunate enough to be lifted above the devastation and survive semi-intact begin reforming into 'modern' world powers - Aetheria Dominion and Skyfront Republic.
Arcane energy released from the meteor and shards of Witchrock litter the surface below, which was now covered in darkness from ash/fallout. The dead rise across the surface wasteland. Other surviving fauna mutate into bestial monstrosities hunting one another for survival.
A man named Nyseris Aralon, calling himself 'The Prophet' emerges, evangelizing the 'One True God.'
He is able to cast magick without Witchrock and claims to be able to commune with heaven. Some claim he is Veremund returned.
The Aetherian Dominion brand him a heretic and he is betrayed, captured, and martyred - cast off the edge of a floating landmass, falling to his death in the undead wasteland below.
A Slyph named Jorvandir, counted amongst the most devout followers of 'The Prophet', betrayed him - arranging to have him captured and trialed by the Aetherian Dominion. This act would stain Slyph-kin for generations, their kind widely being considered untrustworthy, lacking faith and loyalty.
With the Old Gods no longer responding to prayer or delivering miracles, society begins gradually drifting toward a monotheistic belief system focused on governing one's conduct in the present life - rejecting the pleasures of the physical world as evil.
A Renaissance of new construction and technology, a rebirth of civilization under two principal nations (Aetheria Dominion and Skyfront Republic.)
Harnessing magic or wind currents and updrafts for aerial sailing ships, the evolution of settlements into cities alongside the construction of roads and aqueducts/cisterns to capture rainwater, etc.
Civilization exists alongside ruins of the ancients and temples to the Elder Gods that were shattered when the landmass lifted. The continents hover above a wasteland of ruin littered with Witchrock but overrun by the undead and other mutant creatures.
During the Renaissance period, in the year 872, rulers of the Aetherian Dominion and the Skyfront Republic met in a grand and momentous trade council. The historic assembly, celebrated as the "Silver Summit" reached an accord - silver was set as the standard for coinage (given that much of the world's gold remained in mines below the now inhospitable surface.) This pivotal agreement paved the way for a new era of prosperity and cooperation.
Tensions escalate between the Aetheria Dominion and Skyfront Republic into geopolitical, ideological, and military confrontations.
Military buildup and arms race - efforts to build Witchrock stockpiles, develop advanced skyship technology, research increasingly powerful offensive arcane spells, all while engaging in proxy wars and trade competition.
With the dominant superpowers engaged in cold war infighting, they fail to notice the rising prominence of 'The One Faith' or 'Mother Church', followers of The Allfather and his son Nyseris Aralon (The Prophet.) The faithful grow in numbers, their tithes bolstering the Church's coffers.
With missionaries proslytizing the faith across borders it becomes a dominant cultural force nearly capable of challenging the dominance and authority of the Skyfront Republic and the Aetherian Dominion.
The centre of the faith is the ACH GYATSO (similar to the Vatican), atop Mount ZHIDI'YA, currently led by His Eminence, the Exalted Patriarch TASHI.
The Supernaturals - a society of noble vampires who value honor and justice, self-restraint, and the sanctity of life - reveal themselves. They see themselves as the protectors of mortal races against the Ashen Lord and his rogue undead who feed indiscriminantly, cause widespread suffering, and seek domination. The leader of the Supernaturals, SHINKAI, allies himself with the Aetherian Dominion to war against the Wretched, whose raids on the 'Up Above' have become more frequent and more savage.
Mother Church calls upon the Faithful to judge and purify heretics through fire. Heretics are non-believers, pagans, any espouser of false beliefs or other religions, and those who commune with or condone the actions of the Supernaturals ("Let them live amongst their kind down below!".)
High Lector Tashi calls upon the masses to "root out the worst type of heretic - those hidden amongst us, professing our true faith, but corrputing us from within."
The Skyfront Republic quickly aligns itself with Mother Church, seeing an opportunity to shift the balance of power in their cold war against the Aetherian Dominion.
