The Land of Kothrend is a rugged and often dangerous place. Its rolling grasslands, volcanic peaks, dense woods, and murky marshes are inhabited by humans, frightening beasts, and some creatures in between.
The Gods - if they ever existed - no longer walk the land. But the thought of their return, or of ascending to godhood itself, remains a powerful lure for zealots and madmen.
History
History, legend, and myth blend together. It is believed that for hundreds of years a vast human Empire dominated every corner of Kothrend, ruling all the creatures and beasts through might and
magic. Supposedly the Emperors were blessed by
the Gods who then walked the land, or were equal to the gods themselves. But they became twisted and wicked; they enacted harsh laws, amassed obscene wealth, and enslaved entire populations. No one knows why the Empire eventually collapsed, but its remnants are everywhere - ruins, stories, dangerous artifacts. Many of the more beastly denizens of Kothrend still resent humans for the harsh treatment the Empire meted out across the realm.
Culture
Power and authority is local. Laws and regulations are decided by community leaders from village elders to the High Chiefs of the cities. There are no nations but those who possess wealth and power stretch their influence as far as their warriors can roam.
There are customs common to all human settlements due to humanity's Imperial past. The highest principles of human society concern power and patriarchy. It is understood that only men may rule, and that might makes right. Wanton destruction, theft, and cheating are considered crimes in any human community.
Women
While women are not formally subjugated in human lands, anyone with the means to enslave a woman generally can do so. However, communities are strong, and it would be difficult for a man to claim a slave over the objections of her neighbours and family. On the other hand, a woman without friends, community, or means would be at risk. Otherwise, casual harassment and objectification of females is commonplace.
Additionally, young women in Kothrend undergo a coming of age ritual involving an evaluation of their attractiveness. Those who pass this ritual become known as
Nubiles, who then adopt certain social expectations.
