The Wide Sea

Most of the land masses on the planet called Kitsaw are relatively close together. There are a few large outlying islands on the other side of what we're going to call the Wide Sea in English. That's just a translation, of course. We're just using the name used by the largest language group on the larger central continent (which still needs a name).   The Wide Sea is a large ocean, seen as an impassable barrier by most of the cultures on the two major central continents. This view is not shared by the people on the outlying islands to the west nor by the central islanders. They travel and trade across the entire expanse of the ocean. But that is not without its perils. Pirates, hostile creatures, and rogue waves pose a constant threat. It is worth the risk to travel the sea in order to bring back exotic goods and huge loads of fish. The Wide Sea has made many merchants and fishermen very wealthy.   For the various nations on the Nyeta islands, the Wide Sea is sacred. It is believed to be the realm of the gods. They are among the people who trade and fish on its waters, but they also go out in small fleets to commune with the spirits and perform their sacred rites.    There are reports of unmapped lands in the center of the Wide Sea, but nobody seems to be able to find them when they go look for them. Those who have seen them insist that they can't be found in the same place twice because they move around. They are, in fact, a fleet of large vessels that are home to the Shoboi people. The large number of pirates reported around the mystery islands are from the floating city. They make it difficult for anyone to get close enough to make contact with the city itself. This is likely to change in the near future, as a new religion and new leadership among the Shoboi may be friendlier to outsiders.
